How Do You Know When to Push and When to Rest?

January 30, 2012

Disaster struck at the gym this morning. We were doing the P90X  fitness assessment to prepare for February’s Great P90X 2 Experiment (I know!! Squee!!!) that we start Wednesday. The test has you check your performance against the P90X standard in pull-ups, push-ups, in-and-outs (abs), vertical jump, biceps curl max, wall sit, flexibility and a high-intensity cardio interval to check how quickly your heart rate recovers, to see if you are fit enough to do the workout. Needless to say, the test to do the workout is a workout in and of itself. But us being us, we had to [...]

The Grossest Thing That Has Ever Happened to Me at the Gym [Badly Illustrated]

October 18, 2011

No Gym Buddies, no classes, no Experiments (we do NROLFW on M, W, F) – this morning at the gym I was left to my own devices. This happens to me so rarely that when it does I get a little giddy. What would I do if I could workout any way I wanted to? First I did Tabatas, which I hate but do because they’re so darn good for me (lie: it was because I thought Gym Buddy Allison might yet show up and I didn’t want to look like I was slacking). Then I ran a few miles [...]

Is A Chiropractor Good For Sports Injuries*?

November 24, 2010

Somersaults gave me my first official magic power: I have a built-in snow-scraper thanks to my pinkie and ring fingers on my right hand being almost completely numb! Who needs hot pads or full gloves or thimbles when your fingers are devoid of feeling? (Okay, be honest – who ever needs thimbles these days anyhow?) I’m like Wolverine, the soccer mom edition! Or maybe Edward Scissorhands, the toddler edition (you know, no sharp objects)! This would be super-cool except for the fact that along with my impervious fingers, I also happen to be in A LOT OF PAIN. These new [...]

The Cure for Exercise Headaches [Help a Reader Out]

November 24, 2009

If this is how you hydrate, then I think we found the problem… Seeing as you all did such a great job with Laura’s question last week regarding buying cardio equipment for a home gym, I thought I’d throw a bit tougher question your way this week. (Yeah, yeah, you can take the teacher out of the classroom…) In this week’s installment of Help a Reader Out, the feature where you guys help answer questions that I don’t know the answer to, Sunny writes: “Lately, after my runs, I have been getting these massive headaches, even though I drink a [...]

The Nasty Side Effect of Sit-Ups

July 21, 2008

You could always go the Mariah Carey route (hint: it involves an airbrush, several colors of spray tan, and a drastic underestimation of the observational abilities of the general public.) Sit-ups: they’re the one exercise everyone has tried. Mostly because you can’t help it. Even as a baby it was one of the first things you learned – right after how to spit-up. You want to get out of bed in the morning? You sit up. But these days sit-ups have gone from blase to being a raging topic of debate in the fitness world. They’re either the yellow brick [...]

You Guys Are Golden

July 11, 2008

I really do have the smartest, wittiest, most erudite (but not pretentious), caring AND helpful readers/commenters. And sadly, sometimes some of what you guys say gets lost in the shuffle. I do read and enjoy every single comment you guys make (and don’t worry about correcting me – I’m all about the learning! So call me out if I need it!) You all deserve more, I think. So today I’m posting some questions/ideas posed by you that I thought warranted more discussion. (The pics? Have nothing to do with anything except that they are both simultaneously mesmerizing and cringe-worthy. Love [...]
