12 Workouts to Try in 2012 (and book news!)

January 11, 2012

Why yes, I DID end up with a tread-mark right across my crotch! Also, the Gym Buddies tried to leave me stranded on the big tire that randomly appeared in the Y since I couldn’t get down on my own. Ha ha ha. One of the questions I get asked the most – and am probably the least qualified to answer, right after “Can I catch a yeast infection from the spin bikes??” – is “What workout should I try?” And because I love talking about workouts I’ll do my best to help them. (After warning them I’m not a [...]

The 3 Things I Wanted To Change About Myself As a Child [Fun & Fit radio interview]

November 17, 2011

As a child there were 3 things I desperately wanted to change about myself, Anne Shirley-style: I wanted red hair – something I did eventually achieve thanks to every shade of red hair dye in existence until I realized halfway through college that I look really bad as a redhead. My skin has pink undertones and when I have red hair I just look like a hot mess. I wanted to be skinnier – sad but true fact: In my diary written by my 8-year-old self was a list of “Everything I Must Do Before Bed !!!!!” and it [...]

Gym Staple: LBP (little black pants) [Plus winners of the GFE Book 2 title contest! And a GIVEAWAY!]]

June 13, 2011

You like my pull-up tree? This is the spastic pull-up, you might not have seen it done before. There is frog kicking involved. Fashion mags will tell you that every woman needs a “little black dress” or LBD, a blank canvas if you will for all your sartorial choices both present and future. If you get the right dress – one that fits like it was made for you – then you can dress it up with jewelry and heels for a black-tie affair or you can throw on a jean jacket (why yes they are back!) and sandals and [...]

GFE Book #2 Coming At You January 2012!!! [SQUEEEE! Giveaway!!]

May 27, 2011

I may never be as awesome as Chuck Norris but that doesn’t stop me from trying to push the earth away when I push-up. I have great news! I just signed the contract for the second Great Fitness Experiment book! It’s scheduled to be released January 2012!! So more public humiliation, overshares and of course crazy exercise stories coming at you! To say I’m super excited doesn’t begin to describe the size of the pee puddle around my feet. This time around it’ll be a little different though – I didn’t want to just do “Year 2″ because frankly year [...]

The Great Fitness Underwear Debate: Do You or Don’t You?

May 18, 2011

I had a lovely informative post set for tonight about how about how our sleep patterns affect our hunger cycles (scintillating!) but I had to drop everything when this happened: Yes, these are MANTIES. (Panties for men in case you didn’t catch that. It’s late, I’m tired. And also hungry… if only I knew if there was a connection!) Gym Buddies Jeni, Megan and I came across them in the gym parking lot this evening after finishing up a sweat-soaked TurboKick class and my presentation/book signing afterwards. Since only a handful of people showed up to my book event – [...]

How Do You Handle Criticism? [Loving the haters]

April 13, 2011

Worst idea ever (second only to flags asĀ apparel, as you shall soon see): The night my roommates and I decided to sit in a big circle and tell each person what bugged us about them. It started with “she leaves her shoes in front of the door” and quickly progressed to “she poops pebbles like a deer and never flushes” (true story!) complete with screaming, door slamming and even hair pulling. “Constructive criticism” can be good but only in moderation (and never with someone who just sharpened their French manicure). It turns out the Internet is a lot like a [...]

I’m So Excited!

April 3, 2011

Two great things happened this weekend and I’m so excited, I just had to share! First, I was selected as one of the top 3 bloggers by Demand Media – the company behind all the online content for heavyweights like USA Today, LiveStrong, eHow and the Chicago Sun Times! This is a huge honor and I can’t stop grinning:) (And also the prize money doesn’t hurt either!) Second, the Minneapolis Star Tribune ran a feature piece called “A Tell-All Fitness Book” about my book and my ongoing Experiments. The reporter, Katy Read, did a great job condensing hours of me [...]

Have Your Feelings About Your Weight Ever Held You Back from Doing What you Love?

March 14, 2011

Gwen Stefani with 4-month-old Zuma Nesta Rock (I cannot hear that name and not immediately think Zima. I’m sure she did not mean it but her baby will forever be linked to a much-mocked adult beverage.) If this is “gross, big and uncool” sign me up! Gwen Stefani is hot. I think everyone, regardless of gender or orientation, can agree on this one. I have long loved the blond bindi-sporting No Doubt singer – their Tragic Kingdom album is still in my top ten list of albums that most affected me – so I was a little torn when I [...]

Do You Remember When Princess Di Got Married?

March 9, 2011

Do you remember when Princess Di got married? (You know back before the whole fairytale fell apart into the sordid mess of eating disorders, spousal abuse, extra-marital affair, divorce and untimely death – Disney would be rolling in his grave but I bet the Grimm brothers are pretty proud!) Whether you were old enough to stay up late enough to watch it without needing parental permission or not even a wave of nausea in your mommy’s tummy, Princess Di left a beautiful and lasting legacy for all the rest of us princesses-with-a-lower-case-p. Check out my article on memories of Princess [...]
