What’s Your Go-To Food To Bring To Potlucks/Barbecues? [Happy 4th of July! or Happy Thursday!]

So I tried really hard to find you guys a funny 4th of July picture. Pages of Google later all I’d come up with were ecards about not combining booze and fireworks, pictures of girls with their boobs painted to look like flags and a whole bunch of political jokes ranging from mildly offensive to massively offensive. Oh and a cat shaved and then painted to look like a flag. I’m not even going to speculate what that says about us as a country. So instead you get this:

strawberries-500x333

Because how cute are these strawberries and how insanely easy would these be to make? If I’d found this before 11 p.m. on July 3rd, I’d have totally got me some white chocolate and blue sprinkles and made a batch or two up. Even I wouldn’t be able to screw this recipe up (probably). As it is all I’m taking to our new friends’ barbecue is a fruit salad. Because that’s my go-to food for potlucks. So boring. But nutritious and delicious. (It used to be kale chips until I realized that I was the only one eating them and the reason they were disappearing so quickly was because all the kids were crumbling them on my host’s white sofa to make “confetti”.)

Anyhow, today the fam and I are celebrating our nation’s independence by spending an entire day non-independently running a 5K fun run, going to a pancake breakfast at our church, participating in a neighborhood parade, heading over to a friend’s house and then (if the kids aren’t too pooped to pop) watching some fireworks and praying for no more forest fires.

To all my US readers: Happy 4th of July! Do you have a fun red-white-and-blue recipe? What’s your go-to food to take to barbecues/picnics/summer parties?

To all my other readers who are still living through the fourth day of July but don’t have a reason to celebrate it: Happy… Thursday! And feel free to share your fave easy recipe for taking to a barbecue!

  1. On a large cutting board place a 10 lb wheel of gouda.
It don’t get much easier, or better, than that.
What you guys are gonna eat, I don’t know, fend for yourselves. I’m sittin’ right here ’til it’s gone.

  2. I always make pasta salad. But tomorrow I’m making marshmallow s’mores pops.

  3. Happy 4th!

Those strawberries do look good. My go to is black bean salsa – http://javachicksblog.blogspot.ca/2008/09/black-bean-salsa.html

  4. Everyone asks for my homemade salsa and guacamole.

  5. Those strawberries do look good! Happy 4th!

  6. I always bring my black bean mango salad. 2 cans of black beans, 1 can of corn, 2 mangos sliced over the bowl, and about half a red onion. Dress with olive oil and white balsamic vinegar. Leave in the fridge overnight and right before you serve slice an avocado into it. So easy and tastes amazing! People always love it, it makes just the right amount for a BBQ, and it’s impossible to screw up 🙂

Your day sounds great! We’re in the middle of our move so our house has no room to have people over and all our friends didn’t want to host so we might meet up with some people to see fireworks tonight. Other than that just using my day off to pack I guess. Sigh!

  7. Those strawberries are so pretty!
I used to have a fancy-schmancy salad I’d bring to parties. But now, well, I don’t get out much, lol!
We DO have a great view of the local fireworks from our house, however. So that’s what we’ll be doing tonight.
    Happy 4th!

  8. I’m heading to a potluck BBQ right now! My normal go-to is a veggie platter with some kind of homemade dip or sauce, but I’m branching out today. I’m bringing Broccoli-jicama salad that is SO good. It’s been marinating all day and every time I open the fridge I try a bit. You know, just to make sure it is still okay to serve to other people. 😉

    Happy 4th!

  9. I fill a disposable aluminum brownie pan with hummus. Then cover with chopped cucumber, tomato, artichoke hearts, Kalamata olives, feta, and parsley. Besides chopping, takes very little time to prepare and looks pretty. Serve with pita chips.

  10. A bowl of cut up watermelon; best I can do while in the middle of a move.
Got to meet our new neighbors at the 4th of July block party. (But I know it was really to welcome us to the neighborhood.)

  11. 15 pounds of brisket plus 14 hours in the smoker equals great fourth of july meal. That plus homemade ice cream with homemade hot fudge sauce. I pretty much eat what I want on holidays. Sorry if that offends. Had a great Independence Day. God Bless our troops and send them comfort as they spend the day many miles from home and family.

  12. Either this black bean and corn salad: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Black-Bean-And-Corn-Salad-II/, or Marinated Zucchini from the Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home cookbook. For the latter, you slice the zucchini into strips about 1/3 inch thick and saute in olive oil until golden, then layer them in a bowl, sprinkling the layers with an herb of your choice (I usually do basil but mint is nice too) and a vinegar of your choice (red wine, or balsamic). Both of these are super-yummy!

  13. Cucumber salad: thinly slices cucumbers and red onion w/ a dressing made of dill, white vinegar, oil of choice, sugar and pepper.

  14. Happy 4th of July :). We always have a bbq, but am always open to new ideas.

    cheers,Sara

  15. I’m always so glad that someone brings a fruit salad! So don’t worry about it being boring.

  16. Your idea looked so super simple and delish I had to try it! Couldn’t find any blue sugar (no doubt MN Valley Y members bought out all the stores in the area), so made my own with food coloring – came out sort of green with raw sugar. Then the melting white chocolate turned out to be a little trickier that it looked. Had to apply with a knife and reheat, but apparently, you can only reheat once before you’ve made a big hunk of unspreadable chocolate. Ended up with about a dozen strawberries, and when I gave one to Mackenzie, she promptly pulled off the “fancy” stuff and ate the strawberry. Still, I felt proud of myself for making the effort. Thanks Charlotte. Hope your 4th was fabulous!

  17. I’ve done those three color berries before and they’re actually kind of a pain … the colored sugar often runs into the warm melted white chocolate. … When I used white decorative sugar, it was much prettier, and just no blue…

  18. I like strawberries blueberry and marshmallow kabobs. That or lemonade with red and blue lemons (or ice cubes)

  19. Strawberry’s look fabulous!!! My go to is usually pasta salad or broccoli salad. Dessert wise, I usually make a pudding, whipped cream, and crushed pecan dish.
