Demonbells, Girly Muscle-Ups, Legless Rope Climbs and Spastic Me: 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games Mini Recap

Covering the 2012 Reebok Crossfit Games for Shape mag was insanely fun! But because a few little somebodies really missed me, here’s a mini-recap until I can give you my full crazy weekend report!

Priorities: This is what I am doing today. Lots and lots and lots of snuggles!

The energy was crazy at the Games! From the second I walked in, the electricity just crackled. Fittest on earth, quite possibly. Most hyper on earth, definitely!

I got to interview tons of the competitors which amused the men (“What’s Shape?” “Oy.”)

And entertained the women. (“ZOMGoodness I love Shape!). They had these stations set up around the stadium where you could go try a CrossFit workout or warm up.

The vendors and sponsors were just as fun as the CrossFitters. Demonbells! How cool are these kettlebells?!

DO YOU SEE THAT CHICK DOING A MUSCLE-UP? DO YOU?!?!

And… just, wow. Look Ma, no legs!

Of course I took some time toΒ frolicΒ on the amazing California beach!

I stayed with two of my best friends who acted as my photogs and laughed at my pit stains. (Can’t. Stop. Sweating.)

Spent some time at the San Diego LDS temple where my husband and I went on our honeymoon 13 years ago!

And demonstrated our stellar spatial skills by pedaling our surrey into random objects. And no, we didn’t get it to fit. We had to lift that thing up and turn it around… much to the amusement of everyone around us. Twice.

Thank you SO MUCH to all of you who left me notes on here or Facebook! Now, back to my schedule for today…

Do you have a favorite spot in California? Any of you watch the CF Games? Anyone else pit out their shirt in 0.0045 seconds?

  1. So much fun!
Glad you had a good time Charlotte. πŸ™‚

  2. Oh man, SD! I went to college there. We used to call the LDS temple the castle because it was so pretty lit up at night πŸ™‚

  3. Abby, did you go to UCSD? I went there, and we had a gorgeous view of the temple. Feeling a bit nostalgic now…
So glad you had a good time! Now go cuddle that gorgeous family of yours. πŸ™‚
(And next time you’re in California, come up north!!!!!!)

  4. Sounds like an awesome experience and how cute are you? Sort of the “Spunky Girl Reporter” from all the 40’s movies I loved.

And dang it, you were in San Diego while I’m on the other coast?! Next time try a winter or spring visit so I can see you! And hey, we’ve got a guest room!

And I went to UCSD too, though back then the white castle wasn’t there yet. But when we drive that way now I always think of a theme park. Makes the whole religion thing look kinda fun! Are there rides inside? πŸ™‚

( & hope you don’t read these comments until the kids have gotten all the hugs they’ve got coming to them. Oh wait, that would be never. I take that back.)

  5. I am probably a little biased since I live in CA. But here is my mini list:
Big Sur (you can see otters at the beach!)
Monterey Bay Aquarium (so much fun!)
Ferry Building in SF on a farmers market day
Morcom Rose Garden in Oakland (this isn’t a tourist destination, but it is a lovely Rose Garden, and I live a few blocks away)
Art Murmur in Downtown Oakland: First Fridays that don’t feel too pretentious
Griffin Observatory: this was surprisingly fun, and I hate LA
Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego: makes you feel like you should be in an old movie
Claremont Hotel in Oakland: the bar has great views on a clear night of the entire Bay, and during the Christmas Season they have a huge gingerbread house in the lobby, a replica of this Victorian styled Hotel

  6. Um – those demon kettlebells look like they are going to eat me if I don’t get my workout it…

  7. That looked like a fun weekend, but nothing compares to coming home and getting those sweet cuddles in. <3

  8. Looks like a fun event! Those kettlebells are quite intimidating!

  9. Favorite place in CA? Hands down the Anza-Borrego Desert!

  10. Favorite place: the Coronado part of San Diego. Love your “blooper” picture (the one with the pull-up bars). From the angle you took it at, it looks like the one guy is standing on the other one’s head.

  11. I live in CA so…. I was close by but far enough that it would be craziness in our traffic to drive up there every day & could not afford to stay up there OR drive up there each day!

    I LOVE those demonbells!!!

That last pic says it all!!!!!!!!! πŸ™‚

  12. So, so jealous!! Can’t wait to read the recap πŸ™‚

  13. How fun!!! I lived in SD for 6 years but I spent so much time working I don’t really have a favorite place besides my fave restaurants… did love to get to the beach when we could though! πŸ™‚

  14. Yay!!!!

I have the sugar-skull demonbell, and I luhv her.

Glad you came to California–can’t wait to hear about the rest of the games!
