Depressing Research: Losing Weight Will Not Make People Love You

May 30, 2012
awkwardsilence

Why didn’t I have my phone with me?! Of course there’s an actual “awkward silence” app… Gym Etiquette Sin #398: Cracking loud, inappropriate jokes with relative strangers. Just because you’re both in close proximity in hilariously compromising positions still does not give you license to go all Chris Rock in Vegas. (Although if you actually are Chris Rock then you are granted full immunity. And also I’d like your autograph because Hair was one of the funniest-yet-thought-provokingest documentaries I have ever seen.) Anyhow, I (re)learned this one the hard way when I made a terrible joke to a person at the gym [...]

Sweating in Spanx: Is Athletic Shapewear Cheating?

May 30, 2012

Baby Spanx! Somewhere someone is trying to buy these… Having five kids in ten years was not kind to my body. While the kids are 100% worth it (except for #4 today, right now he’s at about 70% thanks to an incident with a grocery cart and a display of condoms and reading glasses (I know, what?!) I’d rather not talk about), my boobs deflated while my thighs expanded and I’ve got so much loose skin on my stomach I have to tuck it into my jeans. Seriously, I call it my skin apron. It’s kind of amazing. I’m not [...]

Go Jump in a Lake! [Motivating yourself to take that first step. Or fall.]

May 28, 2012

Baby Jumping: Officially the worst idea for a sport EVER. My fave is the dad holding up his little girl to watch like he’s all “If you don’t pick up your toys, you’re next!” Highlights of our Memorial Day vacation: Rain. Rock climbing in the rain. Hail. Archery in the rain. Lightning. Horseback riding in the rain. And the coup d’etat: Leaving our third son at the cabin and not realizing it until we were on the stage at the Lodge performing our family skit and the little guy missed his cue. Oops. We made a lot of fun memories [...]

Have A Great (Holiday) Weekend!

May 25, 2012

And this is why you don’t see women doing yoga in skirts… Learn from me ladies.  Hey we’re taking the kids camping for the long weekend (toddlers, in a cabin, in the rain – vacation, what?) so I’ll be MIA from the computer until Tuesday! Happy Memorial Day to my American friends and happy Fun Weekend to everyone else!!

Girl Talk on the Gridiron: Do Women Need Pro Sports to Be Pink-Washed to Enjoy Them?

May 23, 2012

When you put Barbie in a foosball table it just looks like they’re ready for their kickline… While the Men Watch. The feminist in me really wants to hate this. But unfortunately I can’t hear her over the sound of my own laughter. Before your mind (or Google) goes places your boss would not approve of, WTMW is an online show and blog described by creators Lena and Jules, saying: “As two women married to sports fanatics, there was really no escaping hockey on TV – especially during playoffs.  As our men were glued to the game, we were on the phone [...]

How Do You Define Bravery? [Giveaway!]

May 23, 2012

Under Armour slash capris and heat gear top are even cuter in real life! Forgive the pose, I was trying to show you the slashes on the back without just pointing to my butt. Probably should have just pointed to my butt… “You’re so brave!” I never noticed how often people say this until I wasn’t, well, feeling it. Ever since I announced my goal to run Warrior Dash, my first obstacle race, as part of Under Armour’s What’s Beautiful challenge, lots of people have been commending me for my bravery. (Well except one guy who patted me on the [...]

Strong is the Silence: The Things We Do Not Say

May 21, 2012

Sometimes silence is definitely not the best option! It started with trying to take someone else’s words – words that had been used against me – and make them my own. Project Unbreakable* is for survivors of abuse and the premise is that you take the power, the secrecy, the lies, the fear and the validity out of your abuser’s words by showing them to the light. Victims write what their abusers said on cards and then hold it up and are photographed with them, showing how words that once terrorized are now as meaningless as a piece of [...]

Social Jet Lag and Nighttime Fasting: Surprising Sleep Research [And awkward dancing]

May 20, 2012

If stick figures had hair, this would so be me. And yes, there is video of my awkward dancing but thankfully it has not seen the light of Facebook. Yet.  My neck hurts so bad I can’t even touch my chin to my chest. No I don’t have meningitis. I have something worse, something that I haven’t had since college: I have hair-flipping DOMS. This weekend my gorgeous friend (and Turbokick buddy) Lindsey got married and I danced so much at her reception that I pitted out my dress that was not only two layers of skin-tight satin but [...]

Head Butts and Yoga Butts: What works in the gym, doesn’t always work out of the gym

May 16, 2012

This, my friends, is the Rear Naked Choke in action. (I think, feel free to correct me if it isn’t.) Clearly Golem in front is not amused but the guy in back is totally laughing. See? Funny. The Rear Naked Choke Hold came back to haunt me tonight. There I was, sitting in on a jujitsu demonstration as part of my attempt to try out every program Lifetime Fitness offers before my month in fit heaven expires, when I was yet again the only person in the entire room snickering like a 12-year-old boy*. For the record, it’s called “naked” [...]

From Sneaky Sugar Cravings to Speedy Sprinting – How Caffeine Affects Performance, Weight Loss and Mood

May 15, 2012

Photo Credit: Fail Blog You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that diet pills don’t work. If they did, we’d all look like Carmen Electra and spend our nights partying away with the Zantrex dancers. (Not to be confused with the Valtrex dancers – that kind of party is a straight shot to the Jerry Springer Show.) And yet they sell. So who’s buying? We are, apparently. I hate the diet pill ads and yet I’m mesmerized by them. The first time through a mag, I read it for the articles but the second time – I’m all [...]
