Soft Porn Fitness: Has using sex to sell exercise gone too far?

Warning: pics in this post probably NSFW and definitely NSFK (not safe to look at with kids around). And that is a warning I hardly ever have to use on this site.

Confession: I love Bodyrock.tv. When I first came across them a few years ago (see below), I had mixed feelings about the sexified-to-the point-of-exploitation videos and pictures used to demonstrate the workouts. But then I got hooked on their unique and hardcore workouts – bonus: they use minimal equipment and can all be done at home – and the Gym Buddies and I have done a “Zuzana workout” (named after the eponymous Polish girl who modeled all of them) at least a few times a month for the past two years. While her trademark heavy breathing and heaving bosoms became punchlines (there was one workout that she did in a sports bra with the straps purposely removed, something we all found hilarious because what exactly is the point of a “high support” bra with no straps??), I kinda came to feel like Zuzana was a friend in a way. And when she came out about her traumatic erotic modeling past as a vulnerable teen in Eastern Europe, I loved her the more for it. And only suffered slight cognitive dissonance wondering why she still chose to use such provocative poses.

Fast forward to a month or so ago and suddenly everything changed. Zuzana, the star, left the site without much of an explanation and Freddy, previously mostly a shady background figure as her boyfriend and videographer, took center stage. In addition to Freddy they now have a rotating cast of young women who are similarly ripped and even more willing – if that’s possible – to pose with their butts up and their legs spread. And while the workouts have always had unique names – “cherry cherry boom boom” was my personal fave – they have now taken on a certain theme with titles like “I like how it feels” “Turn me on” “Wish you would” and “Don’t stop till I’m hot.” Written out like that, it’s practically a script. While the workouts are still tight, I find myself going to the site less and less. It may just be in my head, but the sex innuendo is even raunchier and the girls seem harder and I don’t just mean in their abs. Maybe it’s not worse. Maybe I just miss Zuzana. Change is hard.

Bodyrock, while one of the more flagrant, is certainly not the first fitness company to use a hot body to sell their product.  “If you’ve got it, flaunt it!” so the saying goes and fitness people certainly subscribe to this mantra. Seen a health or fitness mag lately? Unless it is Experience Life, I’d bet you a trailer of tuna steaks with whole wheat couscous and arugula  that the cover model is in some state of undress. The bikini-clad-standing-thigh-deep-in-generic-water pose is so popular that I don’t think Shape has done a cover in the last 5 years without it.

Fitness TV shows, DVDs and podcasts are flush with female trainers sporting tiny booty shorts and sports bras. Heck, even CrossFit’s been porni-fied. And if you’ve ever tried CrossFit you will understand how very weird that is.

But is there a difference between showing flat abs in a bikini and, well, this?

Reader Katie sent me the following e-mail a few years ago, referring to Zuzana, but I think the points she makes still apply:

This website has really started to transform the way I approach workouts. They are short, intense workouts–from as little as 9 minutes to 45 minutes-tops. It’s all bodyweight based and just requires a floor mat and the ability to do pull-ups someplace. The woman on the site is very fit and is not shy about sharing that these workouts are ALL she does and that a lot of her battle is also in the kitchen.
It all sounds great. Until you look at the site. I’m embarrassed to look at the site around other people because of the way her videos are shot, and the photos taken to show the individual movements. I feel like I’m looking at a soft-porn fitness site! When I’ve showed people where I’ve been getting several of my workouts from, they react with this same mixture of raised eyebrows, but then respect for her solid routines (and body). On the one hand, she sends such a positive message about being physically fit, nourishing your body with healthy food, and to a degree to not be ashamed to show off your hard work. On the other hand, she totally exploits her body and this razzes my feminist sensibilities. Therefore, the message gets a little muddled between the obvious display of silicone and play toward sex appeal and lack of modesty. This site combines so many of my vices—fitness, sex appeal, my love/hate relationship with this site’s goals, and finding the real reason I work out–how much is for my own fitness and how much for outward appearance?
Here’s a screen shot of one of the most recent videos:
“Wish you would pump it”? With THIS pose? REALLY?

And here’s a shot of one of the new models demonstrating a workout… or something.

:

I have to admit that while I am very used to seeing how sexified most fitness women are, these pics really throw me. It wasn’t the clothing per se but more the poses, expressions and mannerisms – ones our society normally associates with porn rather than fitness. Hawt TV trainers may dress like the sexy gym teacher or co-ed cheerleader every man dreams about but – here’s the difference – they don’t usually act like it. This girl calls our bluff and refuses to allow us to pretend that we’re not looking at her butt.

Celebrities on magazine covers and mad-hot women on the Internet are one thing but what about real life? I remember the last time a girl showed up at my gym with night-club makeup, teased hair and sporting cleavage on both ends. People, both men and women, made negative comments about her look and the attitude they assumed she had. Jealousy rearing its ugly head? Or indignation about the breach of the implied moral code? Both? (Or just the fact that I live in suburban Minnesota and not Miami Beach?) When I wrote about this three years ago, I was inundated with comments from people who are not regulars here telling me that I’m uptight, prudish, just jealous and the like. And maybe I am. I’ll own it. But. There is a part of me that genuinely thinks this is not right and porn-ifying fitness hurts women.

On one hand, sex sells. Duh. Who wouldn’t want to look like Zuzana? I do! And – I can’t emphasize this enough – the workouts are fantastic! But on the other hand, is it necessary to go all Jenna Jameson to pimp your fitness routine? Fitness is often a weird place where, like acting and modeling, your body is your product.

What do you think – is soft porn fitness a problem for you? Is there a line between showing off what you worked so hard to create and selling yourself out? Is there a point where overt sexiness in fitness ads actually turns you off the product?  Any other Bodyrockers out there totally thrown by the recent changes?

  1. I guess my threshold of discomfort when it comes to ‘soft p0rn fitness’ is quite high, but I do prefer not-so-sexy workouts and poses. That’s why I buy Runner’s World more often than Shape, as their cover models usually wear appropriate clothing. I was never a Bodyrocker, but I had heard about that site and really liked Zuzana, she’s a sweety, so I’m a bit sad that she doesnt’t do the videos anymore. I wonder how many followers they lost because of the recent changes.

    • I always had an issue with the producers behind those cameras. Every video’s purpose felt like it was meant to be something other than fitness.

Freddy, who’s past specialty included filming porn, has attempted to transfer his “skills” into the world of fitness by “pimping” out the girls in the videos.

Did Lisa Marie expense her breast implants and hair extensions through BodyRock? I am assuming it is a requirement for girls to look fake and big breasted in the fitness videos?

  2. While I’ve read on several different sites that the bodyrock workouts are good, I couldn’t watch them, because I feel it makes me complicit in the whole “pornexercise sells” business.
I’d guess that for just about anyone working out looking good is one of the reasons they work out for, but I don’t work out so I can flaunt my tits and ass and so I chose work-outs that don’t sell that. Plus to me understated sex-appeal is much more appealing then tiny bikinis and hooker shoes (you know, those sky-high see-through shoes that they wear).
When I work out I don’t care what I look like (well of course I don’t dress in rags but first of all I need to be comfortable and I don’t want to worry about my boobs falling out of my top) my main focus is the work-out so my role-models are women (and men) that care more about their work-outs then their (sexy) looks.
Do you know the underarmour add with all women? Yes, some wear skimpy shorts and tops but they are not being sexy, they are working out hard, and that is so much more sexy then someone humping a chair in their supposed work-out videos.

  3. I too really like Bodyrock for their workouts. However, I have never liked the pictures they use, and usually fast-forward thru the videos- I watch enough to make sure I have the right form. I agree with Nina, there are ways to put women in skimpy clothing and still make the point for fitness- not soft-porn.

  4. i love when you write about bodyrock! i’ve been hanging around on that site for quite some time now, but less with all the changes… when i first saw a video i was surprised about it all, i was not used to the sexualising (?) of fitness like that… but then i could see the benefits. i have been doing a lot of home workouts, that’s what i can afford, and bodyrock is the easiest to do right! because of not much clothes and being so ripped, i can actually see myself which muscles that are being engaged (makes it also easier for substituting when that is needed) and by hearign zuz’s panting i can get my breathing right without a personal trainer. it’s been awesome, and i learned to ignore the porn. laugh at it. it was easier the longer i followed bodyrock, since after a while zuz becomes like a friend.

and now, it is not the same. first of all, it is not the same simple workouts. and when they switch trainers all the time, they stay as objects and also get objectified by the poses. there was one video that i was really upset about, i don’t remember which one it was but it felt beyond tacky to me, until i realised they were making fun of their own filming. i tried to laugh at it, with force and confusion, and realised when i read this that i have actually stopped going. i don’t care if it is in good fun they’re doing this, because now they’re crossing lines without realising it and it just seems naive and a little dumb. i never got that impression from zuz. maybe because she was pretty good at keeping focus on diet and exercise, it felt like i could choose what i wanted the workouts to be for. my health, not to get laid.

i’m sorry freddy didn’t get back to you, that makes me even less excited about the changes that has been. maybe it is zuz that you should interview, in a few years as a looking back-interview, maybe she was the brain (obv she was the one coming up with workouts) and not just boobs and muscles that they’re trying to replace her with.

oh but also, these kind of “movements” always go a little “stale” when they get big, don’t you think? it’s like a blog you’ve been following a long time and then it gets big and the blogger starts making money form her blog… not as much fun. things change when it gets big. sometimes because they don’t realise what made them big. i think in the long run it was the workouts that made bodyrock grow, and they could easily have toned down the porny play and still continue to grow i believe.

    • I absolutely disagree with you Emmy. I’m following the site for quite a while now.
I am positive that Freddy was the person behind the workouts. You can even see in the first WO video, he was reminding Z to modify and giving her queues. And after 2-3 years of workouts she was still performing and teaching a wrong form for several exercises.
On the contrary the new Bodyrock.tv hosts are fitness professionals with fitness certificates and kinesiology knowledge to back it up. The new host – Lisa-Marie is gorgeous. There is nothing to suggest she is selling sex. She is very inspiring and motivational person. The community has never been more alive. And the workouts are great. Mental and physical at the same time. I personally can’t imagine going back to do Z’s workouts, so boring :)))
Lisa-Marie is so passionate about exercise and helping people. And in the very short time she has been hosting, lots of people love her. You can see from her FB page or the comments there.
You might want to give a second look at the Bodyrock.tv

  5. It used to be that Zuzuana was just plain hot, but her workouts didn’t really focus soley on her hotness. I loved her passion for health. Now, I am bored with the site. I don’t want to watch porn when I’m trying to work out.

  6. Yeah, it’s definitely weird there. None of the new hosts are as good at instructing as Zuzana was, so it’s like they are making up for it with porniness. It’s also weird how Zuzana just disappeared after saying she was still going to be involved. I watch the site more like a soap opera now than a fitness site.

    • “I watch the site more like a soap opera.” Same. I’ve pretty much always thought of it that way since it seems like they thrive on creating controversy. Plus there’s no way those workouts were all she was doing Zuzana had to moving some serious weight to get biceps/body like that. I hate the inauthenticity.

      • Actually its quite possible that Zuzana got her bod with just BR. I’ve been following BR for about a year now, and I have to say–its extremely effective. What is holding me back from Zuz level fitness: I don’t eat terribly clean and I also get sloppy and lazy during the 15 minute routines. Its much harder than you think to be 100% max effort every time. BUT, my arms are getting defined, I can do pistol squats, real push-ups, I’ve lost 1.5 inches off my waist, and my butt is looking insane. All those jump-lunges, do add up eventually.

The NYTimes recently had an article about HIIT (the kind of stuff BR does) and basically backs up that it definitely can work. Here is the link: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/15/how-1-minute-intervals-can-improve-our-health/
KEY QUOTE: “After six weeks, these lacerating HIIT sessions produced similar physiological changes in the leg muscles of young men as multiple, hour-long sessions per week of steady cycling, even though the HIIT workouts involved about 90 percent less exercise time.”

Anyways–speculate what you want about Zuzka’s personal life but I gotta defend the workouts. They do deliver results.

    • Speaking of the dramatics of it all. She made her own channel ZuzkaLight and posted a video (that basically gives no info) on Monday, looking fab per usual. One commentor said Freddy posted on his page he hasn’t heard from her and didn’t know if she’d have anymore to do with bodyrock. Man I hope her name is one whatever business contract they had cause you know it’s going to be messy. They both seem equally strange. It also seems like he did the dumping. I’ve seen some weird comments in places about their relationship while in L.A., don’t know if any are true tho.

      • Yeah, like I said, soap opera. I was curious about the dynamic of the relationship. Did he force her out, did she have higher ambitions? All the stuff they posted about being best of friends but no longer in love seemed strange.

    • I know that yesterday some one posted a link to Zuzana’s facebook page with an updated “Pep Talk” and the most was “removed by the moderator.” I found it disconcerting that the new Bodyrock seems to be willfully removing Zuzana.

      • They delete everything. I saw one commentor on that Bring Back Zuzana fb page that said she looked up the site ownership info and it had only his name. She also said that after she posted that info on the bodyrock page he changed ownership name to Light Entertainment. I hope she finds away to get residuals, the Internet is sketchy for business IMO. I got deleted when I asked why all the new female hosts keep quitting on the new ad for a new host. But I mean seriously is it the comments these ladies can’t deal with or is it the having to be a sex puppet or him? Maybe Zuzana is better off without bodyrock.

      • This would kinda make a great story/post if someone was into investigating the site and what happened. They don’t seem to allow any negative/questioning comments on their FB or site…i think it’s always been like that. Be interesting the $$ involved too. They did talk a while ago about ‘big improvements’ they were getting built for the site.

        • I’m more interested in the money/business side of it all also. I saw a thing on 60 minutes about YouTube partners. I guess they are trying to make YouTube like tv so they partner with people and give them a thence cash, then you make money based on how many hits you get. They used to go a long time in between video posts, like that dumb burpee across europe thing, but now they are churning them out and revving up the sex hard core. My guess is that without zuzana the hits have gone down so they need to produce more videos and amp up the sex to get the same amount or more hits. I hate how everyone thinks its free, it’s “free” like tv is “free” they are selling stuff subliminally and themselves to get hits.

  7. Kate (a diffferent one)

I still like the workouts, but when they came out with the workout done in no sports bra, just a little, sexy, Victoria’s Secret type bra I thought “If they keep this up I will have to stop going.” I haven’t quite stopped yet, but it is a real disappointment.

I just hope that Zuzana moved on to something she wanted to do more and that is why she disappeared.

  8. YES YES YES
I am one of the…rare women who doesnt feel as tho the media causes my self-esteem to plummet.
when my esteem plummets it isnt because Ive seen a magazine photo or somesuch visual.
BUT I am in 100% agreement with you here charlotte.
It makes me said that it’s 2012 and we women still so often think thats what we have to offer and what we need to do in order to succeed.
and it makes me sad that, in a way, the thought above is right if you define success as money.

  9. The site was always sexualized, but I do feel that the line between “sexually charged” and “trashy” has been crossed. Putting that aside, I also agree that Zuzana was simply better at breaking down and explaining the movements. I haven’t done any of the workouts in the past several weeks, pretty much since she completely bowed out. For a while she was still doing an intro and an explanation at the end, and it was interesting to see how the workout looked with two different people going through it.

What’s amusing to me is the fans posting comments on the website denying that anything has changed, and pointing out that Zuzana’s videos were just as sexy. It’s clear that the videos are more in your face about it these days, but people seem more willing to deny that than to admit that it appeals to them.

  10. I don’t go to bodyrock anymore. Even when Zuzana was there, I forced myself to watch the videos to learn some of the killer moves, but I always felt kinda dirty and had to turn off my higher-brain processes controlling morals when I did.

Be sure to let us know if you find out what Zuzana’s been up to! I would love to find out that she’s doing fitness videos without the porn overtones.

  11. I love bodyrock! I do the workouts severale times a week but while I found the sexyness of Zuzanna sexy and kind of funny I think that bodyrock drifted in a worng direction since she has left. The pictures you showed are not sexy, they make me feel a bit ashamed. I am absolutely not prudish but I would not want to show my parents the side with which I workout…

  12. It was interesting to read this because several of my teammates are doing BodyRock’s 30 day fitness challenge. I’ve done a few of the workouts (which are legitimately tough!), but have been hesitant every day to go check for a new video, watch it, break it down. Some of it may be that I am inherently lazy, and not a fan of inflicting such pain on myself lol but I think this topic might have something to do with it. I hate the way they do their fitness videos. I have to spend at least half the video watching her heavy breathing, weird zooming in on her body parts, etc before they break down the exercises for me. For the length of the video, I would much prefer they just film her DOING the workout. Break down the exercises at the beginning, and then film her doing the workout. I hate having to spend so much time figuring out what I’m supposed to be doing, and then trying to do it on my own, using my precious 10 second rests to figure out what I’m supposed to do next when I could just be following along with a video.

  13. Interesting. I saw the thread where she said that her and Freddy had split but I didn’t know she wasn’t doing workouts anymore. That’s how much I pay attention to it. I don’t need to see chics in bent over positions with their fingers at their mouths because that’s not working out that is just dumb.

  14. I used to be a BodyRocker, then took a long break to have babies and do a round of P90X. I went back to BodyRock a week or two ago and was very, very confused. Like a previous poster said, the site had always been sexually charged (which I was okay with) but now it’s just trashy. I’m not modest at all, but I’ll admit that I was a bit embarrassed when my 10 year old asked what I was watching and this is coming from someone who finds pole work great for the upper body.

I guess if these women are willingly porning up their workout and not being coerced, then great for them. If there are people out there who can workout to the new BodyRock, even better. I, personally, am too distracted by the T&A to get a good burn.

  15. Yes, I follow Bodyrock.tv. Zuzana’s workouts were much better for me. These new ones with Lisa-Marie are extremly complex and take me roughly 45 min to learn/write down before I do the 12 min exercise. I’ve been trying to follow the 30 day challenge, but its difficult to get thru the junk to the purpose of the video. Sean’s (Freddy’s brother) weight
workouts are better, but for some reason I even have been finding him difficult to watch. I miss Zuzana, however she had a video post. relatedfood a few weeks ago which was nice to see her, but pretty Useless info o

    • Sorry…problems posting with my phone…anyway, as I was saying, to sum it up, Bodyrock has progressivly gotten worse in the past few months without Zuzana leading the workouts….hum, maybe a change driven by Freddy and why she bowed out? Also, yes, I need to hide my Shape & Fitness magazines due to the 3/4 naked ladies…I have a 13 1/2 yr old son…(need I say more?) I am also disallusioned recently by the lack of information in those magaziness and am thinking about not renewing them…I can get the same if not better info from Livestrong.com and other websites/blogs

  16. I had never heard of Bodyrock until you mentioned it one time. Since then I’ve gone back a few times and everytime seem something strange. One time she was doing burpees in tube top! Wth?!?!? I’ll trust you that her workouts are good bc I’m too embarrassed to watch one in entirety. I will say her body is the result of hardcore nutrition much more than the result of her “bodyweight” workouts.

I’ll admit when I started filming instead of just writing my workouts, I was concerned on how to present myself. Right now, I’m not as lean as the average fitness professional who steps in front of the camera so I fretted. Then I decided it didn’t matter and thanked God it’s been cold every time we filmed! 😉 not sure what I’ll do when we get to Florida!

Oh yeah – I did set my YouTube comments so I have to moderate. People say the meanest grossest things. If someone is going to call me fat then they can at least click through to my blog to do it! 😉

  17. I love Experience Life! It, and Runner’s World (both Canada and the regular one) are the only fitness/health magazines that I subscribe to! Didn’t you do a post on them a while ago? My subscription is up for renewal soon, I wish there was a way to credit you with my love of the mag:)

Re: overt sexuality in fitness…if I was looking for p*rn, I’m sure I could find it.
I’m not looking for it while working out. I have lots of negative opinions about this movement towards overly sexy + fitness.

I guess the only selling point, is that it’s better than overly thin = sexy, since there’s at least a basic encouragement of health and eating well + exercising. Unfortunately, I’m betting it’s not the best for mental health.

  18. Like many, I love the workouts but hate the presentation. We’ve taken so many steps backward over the past decade in terms of how women are presented and, as a result, treated. Watching the way BodyRock TV presents the workouts, in all honesty, kinda depresses me, especially knowing Zuzanna’s background!
I believe she left because she and Freddy broke up. There’s a Facebook campaign to bring her back: apparently others are not happy with the changes, either.

  19. I’ve followed along with bodyrock for over a year now, off and on. I am an extremely modest person and hate wearing a bathing suit with a passion, but I don’t really have an issue with the portrayed sexiness of br. I go there for the workouts because they are fast and efficient and when I am faithful to doing them, I do see positive changes.

I guess I am able to look past the sexiness and the pornish qualities and just focus on writing down the moves, looking at the videos quickly just to get the gist of each move and then doing the workout.

In terms of people being offended by Z or other trainers wearing only a sports bra and small booty shorts, well, have they actually done these workouts? I get hot as crap when I’m doing them, and so, even with my extreme modesty, I often do them in booty shorts and a sports bra(in the comfort of my own home with the shades drawn of course). Besides this, by them having a lot of skin showing, you are able to better see their muscles engaged and working! I’ve also done the workout program Insanity and most of the girls on there are wearing teeny tiny shorts and sports bras only.

I am very disappointed to see Z gone from the site completely. They don’t even mention her anymore; it’s like she never existed! I did like her much better as a host, because she was very real, sweet and funny. I felt like if I met her in person, we could be friends. I hope that we are able to find out soon what is going on with her.

Anyhoo, Z’s workouts have pretty much ruined me for any other type of training(due to their quick, fast-paced nature and the fact that they take so little time!).

  20. I think there is a differnece between dressing provocatively and acting provocatively. For example, the models/actresses on the covers of Shape are dressed in bathing suits, but they aren’t posed in take-me-now poses or touching themselves inappropriately. That being said, the model from Bodyrock with her pink clad booty to the camera is definitely posed in a provacative manner than seems to overshadow the whole purpose of the workout itself. Does that make sense? I’m not condeming either one, just making an observation.

On a different topic, in reference to the girl in the first picture who is taking the flannel shirt off: does it freak anyone else out when someone is so thin you can see veins across their stomach?!

    • I think that’s a great observation, and totally spot on.

    • About the girl in the flannel and bra – is that what that is, right about the top of her shorts, veins? I was trying to decide if it was a scar from a C-section or lipo (never had either personally).

  21. I don’t care how good the Bodyrock.tv workouts are…I will NEVER even try one. They, in my opinion, are making a mockery of fitness videos AND setting women’s fitness back!

I want women to feel that they can do the same workouts as men…like P90x…instead of feeling like they should be doing some porno title video at home!

  22. I confess that I had to quit doing Bodyrock — but for entirely different reasons. I have 42 year old knees that can’t do jump squats, etc. BUT — I was HORRIFIED when my 14 year old son would see me looking on youtube for the workouts — mainly b/c the ‘similar videos’ ARE porn because of the still shots that are used. I find it very intriguing in the article about her former life in the erotic modeling industry that Zuzanna is quoted as saying, ” I have a dream about doing something to help stop the cycle of exploitation that feeds on these young girls and destroys their lives.” Um… she may want to start by stopping this niche of the exercise industry that shows this side! I do think there is some cultural differences there — American fit women look to athletes (Gabrielle Reece, Mia Hamm, etc.) as role models, and European women may simply look to the modeling industry — which is based on selling sex.

    • Perhaps Zuzanna is reevaluating the way she wants to present herself, and this is why she isn’t on the site anymore? I really loved Zuzanna and felt she was able to dress like that and do those workouts without appearing trashy, in my opinion. I’m hoping she’s affiliating herself with someone somewhere that can showcase her amazing talents and motivating skills, and that we can have her back on the internet to learn from.

  23. Man, my blog roll is on fire today…tons of good posts, including this one.
First off, the overly-sexified gimmickry of Bodyrock doesn’t really bother me. I have a very high tolerance for the risque. Perhaps the message is detrimental to our society on some level, but personally speaking, it doesn’t bother me or make me think less of myself.

And I think part of the reason it doesn’t bother me is because it’s a legitimately tough and effective workout. If they were pushing fat-loss supplements or something equally shady, then that site wouldn’t be as popular as it is now. Let’s face it, people have sex on the mind. Bodyrock captures your attention with sexy images, but KEEPS you with its quality workouts. Yes, I see the dichotomy of how it could feed into our insecurities yet encourage being healthy. But like I said, those images don’t make me feel inadequate about myself. Perhaps TMI, but I am also pretty comfortable with sexuality so yeah.

As for the recent change, it really impressed me to see how much people (including myself) love Zuzana. I miss her on the site, but still go there because I like the workouts. I think she was really one of a kind.

    • They sell clothes, shoes (total product placement) and equipment instead of supplements, however, they were selling supplements before Zuzana left. Wonder what happened with that? Possibly they only wanted Zuzana. Ugh remember over the summer how they were hocking that stupid $100+ glorified medicine ball?

      • Yes, I remember. I know they had some affiliate deal going on with the sandbags, dip station and “Ugi” ball, but I was forgiving of it because it wasn’t so “in your face.” As long as the workouts are there, I’ll continue to do them.

        • In Zuzana’s defense, they also showed ways you could get around buying the equipment and featured readers ideas of how to make your own sandbag(which I did for a year and finally got a real one for Christmas-it’s way better) and I use a walker I bought at goodwill for $2 as a dip station.

Additionally, they put these workouts out there for free; it only makes sense that they should be able to make money somehow. What fitness guru, or for that matter athlete doesn’t have some sort of affiliate with some workout company, supplement formula(which could be as simple as protein powder), or athletic clothing?

  24. I’m definitely not a small person or ripped, and I agree with a previous poster who said that in my own home, I strip down to what is definitely NOT acceptable in public! I’m too darn hot and sweaty, and it’s my own house, so who cares? I think as far as the clothing goes, I don’t care what the girls wear on the videos. I’d probably be a little uncomfortable if people in my gym started dressing like that, because sexy bras and booty shorts are a bit much in public (unless it’s the beach!), even if you are exercising.

That being said, I don’t like the content since Zuzana left. All the newbie trainers confuse me and the posing, workout names and the like is very over the top.

  25. Ugh, I’m just as conflicted as you! I love the workouts that the site has to offer, but I hate the way they are presented…especially since Zuzana left. I would be happy to see women confident in how they look but the titles and poses cross the line. I refuse to go to the site at work for fear of what my coworkers might think. I hate to support a message of female objectification…but their workouts are killer!

There are other workouts available that are just as good; I think I need to take Man Bicep’s advice (whose comment appears several before mine):
“I want women to feel that they can do the same workouts as men…like P90x…instead of feeling like they should be doing some porno title video at home”

  26. My guess is that bodyrock is less concerned with the potential harm they do to women and more concerned with making money. The more they push the boundaries the more people talk about them and the more people talk about them the more hits they get to their site. I mean who isn’t going to go check out what they’re all about after reading articles like this one.

The problem is that others will copy this successful business model and it will become the norm, then you’ll have to push the boundaries even further to get this kind of attention.

  27. I am with you Charlotte! I always loved those Bodyrock workouts – seeing them but I do my own thing but I know people loved the workouts….. BUT, I always did NOT like the way they shot them & the whole women thing you discuss here. I see it way too often & it is sad & frustrating in this day & age BUT it is everywhere. As when I was young, as a 54 year old, it still makes me feel like I can never do what I want to do which was when I was younger & now, show how I stay fit for 30+++ years. I don’t have the look.

I will tell you – my morn news programs are starting to look like peep shows – no they don’t wear skimpy but provocative & bringing in sexy & pretty women for the news & weather & anything else they can throw in there & the other ladies just disappear without a word!

  28. Ok I’ve never heard of BodyRock but damn if I don’t know a sexifidied pic when I see one!

  29. Fantastic post! Whether or not people take issue with this trend it is important to recognize it exists and that this is not naturally how women and fitness coalesce. I certainly take tons of issue with it because it reinforces the notion that women keep fit to be sexually appealing. I’ve never done BodyRock but have heard great things and do actually want to try it. I have a hard time looking at those women because of my exercise addition background. I feel like a failure that I don’t look them, but only for the two seconds until I remember what sort of life you have to lead to have 1% body fat and also…they are airbrushed.

  30. If I wanted to show my daughters an example of what a smart, savvy, intelligent, strong, healthy, independent woman looks like — I wouldn’t pick BodyrockTV.

  31. She is actually a porn “star”. Goes under the the name Susanna Light or something like that. I didn’t believe when I first heard that but looked it up and saw some things I would have preferred not to have seen. In your last post on the subject somebody else mentioned it.

I have seen Bodyrock TV but the incessant boobs in your face thing just irritates me so don’t watch it. I find the whole “soft-porn” fitness trend really anti-feminist and frankly unappealing.

  32. OK, I miss Zuzana! But to be honest, I don’t have a problem with Bodyrock past or present. I guess in general I am just not a prude, plus have watched European TV when I lived overseas (and even commercials from Germany can seem kinda like soft porn sometimes), so I called in the “expert” (my husband…as a typical guy if something is a bit “naughty” his mind will go there), and even he agreed it wasn’t too sexual. It does look like a good workout though. Right now my “workouts” are restricted to Just Dance on the Wii and long nature hikes, but I would do like to look at Bodyrock from time to time as inspiration of where I’d like to be headed. (OMG, the new trainers abs!!!)

  33. I probably wouldn’t wanna watch that, for the same reason I toss the Victoria’s Secret catalogs right into the trash. But if it motivates you, go for it!

  34. I love this blog post! I agree with it all! It is possible to look fit and healthy without looking like you’re a porn star!

  35. Sorry, gotta say first about Bodyrock.tv: Zuzana is Czech (not Polish) and Freddy, the videographer was her husband (not boyfriend). That of the way, i presume they met on her old modelling assignments due to his ‘work’ when taping her. It’s a peculiar blend of strength and low self-esteem that was marketed by the duo. Strength from her workouts but surely if she felt better about herself, and if her husband valued her in other ways, she would not have been always so skimply attired and have only her sexual attributes marketed on the site. I wonder if their astute marketing both helped and hindered them. Yeah, they got more hits but it’s not that different from her background and at some point she must have wanted to move on.

I often skip the workouts which seem too soft-porny in the images. I still do the occasional one but don’t check in on the site as much now that Zuzana is not there. Also, she was super fit and seemed to have very low body fat – but the ‘hosts’ since then have had very thin and smaller frame bodies than her. Idk what that means, just an observation.

  36. Being fairly, well okay, really naive I never thought much about it until one day several years ago. I had been a regular subscriber to Shape magazine and had a bunch of issues in a neat pile by my treadmill to flip though while running. One day, we needed some work done in our basement. We both would be at work that day so we told the repair guys to let themselves in the basement door if we were gone when they came. That night when we got home we went downstairs to see if the work had been done. We were pleased to see that it had but I was dismayed to see all my Shape magazines laying open and not to the pages with the most amount of words, if you know what I mean… I suddenly felt uncomfortable as it occurred to me that those mags could be more suggestive than I realized.

It is a difficult balance because people wearing Hanes sweats is hardly motivating imagery for a fitness publication!

  37. Used to do a lot of bodyrock.tv workouts, but after Zuzana left, I’ve barely visited, and have gotten a strong “ick” feeling from the site. She was scantily dressed, and photographed with emphasis on her body, but her sweetness shone through so much it never seemed icky. (Also, in the privacy of my own home, I also dress in very little to work out, since I stream sweat.) Anyway, I seriously dislike the new bodyrock.

If you manage to do an interview with Z, Charlotte, that would be awesome… love to find out how she’s doing; it’s a bit disturbing how completely she’s vanished from the site now.

  38. I was prudish about the old videos and recently, I’ve had to find short, effective workouts like bodyrock. I went to the site a few weeks ago and I was seriously APPALLED at these photos and more lie that. I just saw the one where she’s wearing a bra (the photo you posted) a couple days ago. I watched the video to see how the moves should be done, and you can’t even tell from the way it is filmed! All the shots are close-ups of her abs and boobs and butt. How am I supposed to figure out how to have great form (as she preaches in the intro section) when I can’t see her form!?!

I just got an Oxygen magazine with several HIIT and Tabata style workouts, which is basically all bodyrock is. Even though I hate Robert Kennedy with a passion (that man is such a bitter old money-grubbing you-know-what), I’d rather give him my money.

  39. I agree with just about every comment here. Bodyrock is great when you cant get to the gym but you want to work out…and it works!
I loved Zuzka. I liked the friendly approach she brought, and the way it felt like knowing them. I actually found her sexualization kind of funny. It was just SO in your face that you couldn’t do anything but laugh when you saw Zuzka doing a recipe demo in a schoolgirl outfit with her boobs hanging out. It worked because she was both hot AND sweet, if i make sense…
i really don’t like the new hosts. The site feels less personal, and while lisa is really ripped and everything, i just don’t like working out with her!

  40. A problem?! Heck yeah! You can look like Jillian Michaels–fit, toned, and not “pornofied”, or you can take the risk of clicking on Bodyrock TV and then try to click off as soon as you can, once you see the images and hear the sounds/grunts Zuzanna makes. She does it on purpose! She had been in that industry and she knows what sells. I personally could not take looking at the images or the videos, no matter how “good” the workout is. There are good and even better, with less sleaze out there!

    • I don’t think the groans were to lure someone in. I think they’re legit grunts from pushing thru a tough workout. For the record I make much louder and obnoxious sounds during mine and not in purpose.

  41. I agree 100% with everything you wrote/said. Actually Freddy and Zuzanna are or where married. I miss Zuzana, even with her past I have no room to judge her. I have not walked in her shoes. I can only hope she is moving on for better and not using her body towards anything but exercise. I go to Bodyrock.tv to less and less. Only to quickly scroll down to see what the work out is. I never tell anyone where I get my exercise routine from, just because of the soft porn poses. They are not needed. I think Freddy needs to think out of the box on that one and since Bodyrock is going through change it is a perfect time. I love the workouts because they are short and sweet and hard, but not all of the wacky poses.

  42. I’ll be honest, I was put off by bodyrock the first time I looked at it. Nothing about it felt empowering to me. Yes, the workouts are great, but I can get great workout ideas other places. Guess I’m not their target market.

Another stab at honesty – I do judge people unfairly when they show up at the gym looking like they’re at a night club. If they want to prove me wrong and work out super hard, I will eat my silent words. I haven’t had that happen though. The gym is for working out and working on your health, not showing off your new silicone.

  45. I like Bodyrock, though I have never tried their workouts. I like Zuzana, she seems super sweet, I also like the new hosts, they seem nice as well. I can’t imagine how hard it must be for a couple who have a business together to break up but maintain the business. HOWEVER… If Zuzana is no longer on Bodyrock, totally fair enough, but if that is the case then maybe they should change their background from a GIANT PICTURE OF HER. Just sayin.

    • Now, I would never suggest that my comment here is what inspired them to remove Zuzana as the background image of Bodyrock.tv, but the picture of her is gone.

  46. I am/was a Bodyrocker (I do the workouts sporadically). I got into the workouts through youtube, and after a while started visiting the site for more detailed breakdowns. I liked them because they were short, hard and I got awesome results (this is starting to sound like a shill lol). They kicked my butt with standard squats, lunges, pushups; and with crazy fun moves that inspired me (dive bombers, reptile pushups, capoeira) Also, Zuz’s sweet, engaging personality made it feel fun and exciting. When it comes to the pictures, I’m usually like ‘Oh hey butt..oooOMG LOOK AT THOSE ABS!!’ Actually, if you go back to some original videos (back when her hair was SUPER blonde), she wore A LOT more clothing than she did towards the end. I believe at some point, she might have gotten a deal with nike, because if you notice after they go to LA for ‘meetings’ (maybe I only remember because I was watching pretty regularly at that time), she starts sporting lots of nike workout gear. When watching the workouts, I usually mute them (the sounds are a little awkward), but I confess to making similar grunts and groans when working out (I’m at home, so maybe it’s not as awkward lol). It was interesting watching the evolution, although I don’t watch as much because she’s gone (I’m watching for the 30 Day Challenge because I need a set schedule to get into the habit again). I like Lisa’s enthusiasm, but some of her workouts are WAY too complicated. The poses seem more sexy/trashy (oh hey shot of just her butt from behind) and less ‘Yeah I’m sexy, cause my body is FABULOUS.’ Jmo.

  47. I love Zuzana and the earlier bodyrock workouts. She may be porn-y, but as mentioned above, she has genuine sweetness that shines through. I downloaded my favorite Zuzana workouts to my computer and I mix and match them as needed for my daily workout. No need to visit the site any more.
I HATE the new bodyrock.tv – can’t stand the new hosts, despise Freddy, and I bemoan the sleazier feel. Not only are the new workouts overly complicated, but it’s all about selling stuff now (constantly pushing equipment, tee shirts, etc…) and creating “buzz.” Facebook, google +, twitter, pinterest, etc… Enough!
By the way, Zuzana has started posting workouts to her own youtube channel (zuzka light) and she must be working on something new in LA… Did her newest workout yesterday and it was pretty killer (low budget, non-porny, all bodyweight).

  48. yes, Zuzana is porny. maybe thats because she is a pornstar. yes, is not was. http://www.actiongirls.com is her current project.

  49. Adding my name to the chorus of people who didn’t really like the sexified approach of BR but really liked Zuzana. She was really enthusiastic and came across as a really caring individual. I don’t care what she did in her past. She’s not doing it now and wants to help people get fit.

Don’t care at all for the new host and don’t envy her figure. It might sound shallow but all I kept thinking during the workout is “I don’t want to look like her at all!” Her workouts are frantic and overly complicated. I tried to do the 30 Day challenge but I gave up. Not only were there too many moves but there was way too much use of their sponsored equipment.

  50. I’m really glad I found a discussion like this about Bodyrock.tv. I got into the site just a couple of months ago. I had visited it a few times before and was, frankly, turned off by the porny look of the videos but decided to just give it a try after hearing so much good stuff about the workouts and Zuzka.

I absolutely loved the workouts and Zuzka’s personality won me over, the porny stuff kind of became background noise (although sometimes I would just have to laugh at how silly some of the camera angles were). Now that she’s gone, I haven’t enjoyed the workouts in the same way. They seem overly complicated (as was stated before), they use too much equipment that I don’t have and don’t want to buy, and the porn factor seems like it has been turned up. It seems somehow more overt. Maybe I’m just being (hypo)critical because of the change. I don’t know.

Not only that, but I really trusted Zuzana with creating workouts. She always seemed to have safe modifications and communicated really clearly about the importance of form and working at your own level. That kind of stuff is incredibly important to me and the reason I missed her the most.

I didn’t see it mentioned, but she’s posting new videos and workouts on a Facebook and YouTube page, both are ZuzkaLight. Her workouts are going to be called ZWODs now. The first one had no equipment (hurrah!) and was killer (and the camera angles seemed way toned down to me). It will be really interesting to see what direction she takes this new project in. This teaser motivates the heck out of me though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ygu3hh7em1k

  51. I came across this blog and just thought I would give my two cents. First of all, Zuzana or the “sexually explicit” fitness photos/outfits never bothered me for several reasons. One is because I really like to see the muscles involved in each movements so I can focus on where I am feeling them and the second reason is I take a class from Chalene Johnson (the creatrr of Beach Body Turbo Jam/Fire blah blah blah) and the outfits she wears are very similar. In fact, you see a room full of people wearing the same and this it at an actual gym. I do feel that the newer photos/hosts are trying to be over the top with the sexual nature or maybe I feel like the new host is just trying too hard. I have checked out Zuzana’s new workouts and I feel it is not nearly as sexual in nature so I am wondering if her ex was the push behind that marketing ploy. Just a thought.

  52. I totally agree, I was never comfortable with Suzana being filmed that way (she’s Czech btw, not Polish) but the workouts were great so I ignored it. The clothes never bothered me, that’s just normal sports attire but the way she was filmed wasn’t exactly what I liked. Since she has left Bodyrock it’s never been the same. Suddenly more and more equipment is added and that Lisa-Marie person doesn’t even wear proper sports wear, the “workout in a bra”-thing just looked painful and it kind of disgusts me, this has nothig to do with fitness or a tough workout routine anymore. As someone already mentioned I also never felt like “I want to look like her!”
Suzka has a really inspiring and caring personality and I think that’s what made me stick to Bodyrock despite the oversexed videos. Those new hosts do have great bodies but aside from the negative developement of the workouts their personalities do the opposite of what Suzka was doing. The whole “oh this will hurt, don’t do this, never eat that, you must do this blabla” is just discouraging, cold and annoying.

I’m glad Zuzana has opened her own fitness channel on youtube, I’m sticking to her workouts and since her ex-husband isn’t filming her there’s nothing too oversexed. I’m very happy about that developement!

  53. http://www.fruitytufy.com is a new fitness and health website.have a look, guys and feel free to comment..

  54. I actually got into BR.tv through my sister. lol But not so much the site itself, but Zuzana’s workouts posted on Youtube while with BR. The names for some of the workouts and teaser pics on the postings, did make me a bit leery. I’m a gentleman and respect women, so there’s that said.

And sometimes, some of those angles in the BR.tv videos featuring her did give me that same feeling. But here’s the thing….

The workouts are killer, and many of which use only your own body weight. Plus they don’t usually take much time. Right now, I can’t swing a gym membership, a personal trainer, and tons of equipment either. So it works for me on another level too. There may have been that squick feeling to some of the angles and such, but Zuzka always seemed to have this genuine sweet, playful and down to earth kind of vibe, and stressed doing what you can do at least from what I’ve seen. Plus, I like seeing how even she gets her butt kicked by the workouts, that she messes up or has to switch to the more beginner levels to finish up the rounds sometimes. It shows she’s human, and not some super buff workout machine, like, “If she’s getting her ass kicked, it’s okay that I am too.” Look at some of the older videos, she was cut, not ripped, but cut, so to see her struggle being that fit makes it okay for all of us to struggle too, and “Push for max reps”

Since I just got into it over the past few months or so, I’d never gone to the site itself, and when I learned she was basically gone, I was disappointed. It wasn’t just the workouts, but her personality that made her great to work out with. Yeah, she’s pretty, but that’s not why I like her workouts. And her breathing? It helps me know if I’m breathing right and for that matter, reminds me to actually breath. lol

Then I found out she’d started up her own FB and Youtube channel (ZuzkaLight on both), and I was happy to see the camera angles and approach are what it should be, her doing the work out and not that sexploitation-y feel. It’s basically the same sort of HIIT workouts, and like before, sometimes there is some sort of extra weight, but you don’t necessarily need them, certainly not starting out.

What I think is great about the new videos is that you don’t have to go to another place for the breakdown, she has the rep counts, rounds and names of the exercises in the videos themselves. They’re not posted daily, even though initially she was calling them ZWODs (Zuzana’s Workout of the Day), the name has now become ZWOWs (…of the Week). She’s got five up so far, as of this message. And they actually follow her doing the workout, all the way through. To me, it’s a huge improvement over her time at BR.

  55. If you go to her facebook page zuzana light. You can see she has got a tv show and she does upload them as well on her page. It’s nice to see her getting her own show and getting credit for BR site and fans she built up.

  56. I have watched Zuzana’s workouts for years and she is a HUGE motivation to me. I’ve never actually done one because I was in a car accident a few years ago and broke my collar bone which took over a year to heal and did not heal properly, but she has motivated me to do my own workouts and to rehabilitate myself. The two things I found most helpful were that I could see a woman doing incredibly hard workouts, which I found awe inspiring, and her heavy breathing. Because of Zuzana, I feel it’s okay to actually breathe during my own workouts, which allows me to push myself. I may not ever get back to the way I was before the accident, especially my flexibility, but if it hadn’t been for Zuzana, I’d probably still be feeling like a decrepit old person. I actually miss the whole Zuzana/Freddy/bodyrock.tv videos. I thought they were a great couple. I just put the whole sexy look thing aside, figuring if I didn’t like it, it was partly because I’m repressed and partly because I’m envious of her figure, and I thought, if she’s happy, then why not? Does the whole world have to be like me?

  58. Been doing Bodyrock workouts for a while. I think the provocative screenshots were done for more Youtube views and it worked as a marketing effort (sex sells!).

I’m not too offended by the videos because I work with fitness models and physique competitors on a regular basis. The fitness industry is just like that.

Miss Zuzana. She had an awesome personality. Sure she wore skimpy outfits but she was always so kind, sincere, passionate and authentic.

  59. I greatly enjoyed this article and I think you are correct that sex is used as a sales tool. HOWEVER, sex and sexuality are human traits. I don’t understand why pointing out their use or trying to denying their nature is such a trendy thing in this country. Sex is human and humanity is wonderful. We all want the pleasure of sex and there’s nothing wrong with that.

  60. Nice Post– I’m just wanting to give another thumbs up for the new videos that Zuzana is putting out now: she’s up to ZWOW #20! The new filming style is far less sexual and the exercises are still remarkably difficult. I guess it’s easy to figure out that Freddy (her ex-husband) was likely the person responsible for the explicit filming style while Zuzana was the one who was thinking up new exercise moves.

I’m so glad she’s back, she kicks my butt every time. You can view her workouts on her YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ZuzkaLight

    Go Warriorz

  61. I totally agree with a lot that has been written here. I, too, have left Bodyrock after 3+ years because I find it has become a tacky place, where we can now observe how a perfectly healthy and beautiful woman (Lisa-Marie) turns herself into a shallow and superficial looking spitting image of “beauty”. Health and fitness for me simply do not go together with breast implants, lip jobs and all this make-up. A human being with a healthy self image does not need all this stuff, period. And if the person needs & wants these physical alterations to feel better about herself, then she is not a role model for me or my kids, but someone I feel deeply sorry for. This, and of course the fact that I find the fotos Freddy takes of Lisa-Marie misogynous, distasteful, uninspiring, tacky and plain silly. Zuzka takes a much more pleasant road, she is also sexy, but with her it is not tacky at all.

Having said this, I must also say that I fail to see how the photos in this blog post could be considered NSFK. How so? A woman in silly poses is not safe for kids? A female body in underwear is not safe for kids? Excuse me? In which remote, religious fundamentalist cave is this the case? I want my kids to have a healthy, relaxed relationship with the human body of either sex. Sexually explicit material is not for kids and I protect them from that while they are young, but a woman in underwear or a bikini does not qualify as sexually explicit material for me. A cameltoe does not qualify as sexually explicit material for me. These pictures here and on bodyrock are definitly safe for MY kids to watch – even if LM does silly, distasteful poses and pants heavily during a workout. I think it is important to take a stand against models that are too skinny, body images that are unhealthy and unrealistic, misogyny and against this whole overblown porny sex sells stuff in our media, but please keep in mind that our bodies are natural and sex in itself is a healthy thing that your kids, too, will want to engage in sooner or later. Don’t make them believe it is the devil’s work and that nudity itself is a serious problem. It is not and should not be.

  62. http://www.zuzkalight.com/
Zuzana’s new workout site. Currently under development. Her current videos are at http://www.youtube.com/user/ZuzkaLight?feature=watch
where she has uploaded 21 videos in the last couple months.

I will take this moment to add that I am the farthest definition of prude or inhibited and I was insulted by what developed on bodyrock in the wake of Zuzana’s departure. Exploitation of a previously acquired market. I wish many blessings to Zuzana’s move into her own production.

  63. When Zuzana was part of BR she really made it work.
BR has lost it’s edge & classiness, in my opinion Zuzana was BR!
Zuzana’s over sexualised style & work out clothing aside, she is so good at motivating people in her gentle & approachable way. She has an amazing warmth & kudos to her that she went through what she did & found a way to re invent herself & inspire people to get fit!
Lisa’s personality is quite irritating & forceful & it’s not as motivational as Zuzana’s. Actually she annoys me so much I can’t bare to go on BR, I just look for old exercise clips with Zuzana.
Sean & Freddy seem to have become so smug lately & all the new females appearing to do lead work outs gives the impression that BR is more about marketing women’s bodies than focus on fitness. It’s become abit sleazy & sadly that all happened after Zuzana left.

  64. Funny, I came across this post while doing a search for bodyrock.tv. But it was tied to the subject.

Anyways I felt I should chime in. I feel they have really gone too far to with the models attire, the photos take and the screencaps of the videos.

What’s really odd is that they seem to be targeting woman.

  65. It’s really funny that I found your website today. I was also a fan of Bodyrock,tv while Suzanna was the host. But Since then I not motivate to go on their website anymore. But what it shocking me the most is that the new host Lisa had 3 plastic chirurgy: boobs, lips and now nose since last december…. I really wonder what happening and what kind of people are behind Bodyrock.tv. What they are telling to those girls to make them change. The web site was about to be fit and healthy even with that sexiness… but now the only thing this website make me think of is no matter fit and healthy you will be… you will maybe need chirurgy… Sorry for my broken english.

  68. Zuzana Light was a nude/erotic model for many years under the name Susana Spears long before she met Freddy & Sean, so please don’t paint her as some holier-than-thou innocent party, she is every bit as filthy as those two.

  69. Fabulous, what a website it is! This blog presents helpful data to us,
    keep it up.

  70. you’re in reality a good webmaster. The site

you’ve done a magnificent task in this subject!

  71. I totally agree with you!!! I miss Zuzka.
I like to work out and don’t want to watch porn!
I’m sure the men are the ones klicking the likes as it’s the soft porn for free on YouTube for them, shame the Fitness industry had to get to this point, shame.
