My Mullet of Gym Outfits

The family that mullet-s together, stays (in therapy) together!

Mullets were cool, then they were lame, then they were super duper old-creeper-man lame but then they came back around to being parodied, worn ironically and then – heaven help us all – done intentionally. The mullet is back, y’all. And while I don’t think I will ever bring myself to cut my hair into a mullet, the Mullet Gym Outfit has become a staple of late. What this means of course is that I’m all business in the front:

And PAR-TAY in the back!

Yep, these days I’m all about having interesting backs on tops (wow that sounds funny). Sometimes it’s multitudinous straps, other days neon bandage straps (pics of that one coming! I have one word for you: unitard. Be afraid.) and today: lace! Which was convenient since I wanted to show you all my Champion bra and heaven knows you’ll never see me in it by itself. I love this thing because when I wear it nothing(s) moves. Period. I’ve never found a better high-impact bra.

Today I wore this hot little number – the Champion Double Dry+™ Spot Comfort™ Max-Support Sports Bra – to TurboKick and while there is a lot of bouncing around in that class, my girls stayed put. It’s got a racer back but it also has an adjustable hook clasp so that you don’t have amputate your areolas trying to get it on. (You know you’ve been there!) This is particularly good for me since I have a seriously small ribcage. I won’t tell you my bra size (even I have my internet overshare limits) but suffice it to say that it’s hard to find bras in my size without resorting to the little girl’s department… which I have done. I’m not proud. The only downside is it also flattens my already tiny tatas but it’s a small (ha!) price to pay for comfort! (True story: I spent 20 minutes the other day trying to wear it inside out so the cute blue stripes would be on top. Didn’t work. Feel free to carry on with your weekend now.)

Disclosure: I got this bra for free and Champion is sponsoring this post but these opinions are ALL mine. I only accept sponsorships for things I honestly adore. Want to win your own bra? Anyone else really into “mullet” workout clothes these days?? Anyone willing to admit to ever having a mullet haircut? I will – I totally rocked on in elementary school. I’d post pics if my scanner was working. (Sure I would.)

P.S. I’d also be into workout bottoms with fun backsides if I had any. I totally covet this speed skirt:

  1. 1) Have that skirt, lurv it. Can you do a post (or perhaps you already have?) on what to wear when your gym is full of your colleagues? I’m happiest wearing tanks and capris, but all are from lululemon, and thus very form-fitting. I don’t really want my colleagues to see me that way…but at the same time, I should be comfortable working out. Right?

    2) Have you seen this? I’m totally speechless. http://www.salon.com/life/body_wars/index.html?story=/mwt/feature/2011/08/24/do_little_girls_need_diet_books

    • Considering my “collegues” pick their noses and need nap time, that would be a fun post;) Actually though you make a really good point! I remember working out once and having a fellow teacher walk in and being suddenly SUPER conscious of how short my shorts were. I’ll add this one to my list! And thanks for the tip about the diet picture book. It’s CRAZY.

  2. Yeah i have that Lulu skirt too but in black. I wear it over my compression pants. It’s super pretty on. Has anyone ever used a pocket on a skirt though?

  3. I like that skirt a lot. I almost bought it a while back and am kicking myself. I really need more workout stuff…

I just got back from my 20 year reunion…we had a good goggle at our hair back then. For me it was all out poofy perm…the guys rocked the mullets. I was thinking the other day since acid wash denim seems to be back that the mullet wouldn’t be too far behind…I do hope not. 🙂

  4. I’d like to say goggle was a clever combination of ogling the yearbook and giggling…which we did….but it’s just me and my not typing properly again 🙂

  5. I love that shirt!! I usually just wear super ratty looking old t-shirt , but now that I live in a small town and see people I know EVERYWHERE I go, I feel like I need to be more *ahem* presentable. So, I have been wearing nicer looking stuff but that shirt….I want it! And I really want that skirt that you are wearing (and the lulu one, but yeah….$$). Where’s that from?

    • The skirt was from Kohl’s and was just a few bucks. Shop outside the “athletic” department for cotton tees, tanks etc and you can save a ton of money! Also, swap with some friends. Turbo Jennie and I trade around our clothes so it pretty much doubles our wardrobe!

  6. I had no idea mullets were out, dang.

  7. I am a 32B myself. Is your ribcage smaller than 32?

  8. Im happy to share too much about my bra size 28F here! It’s close to impossible to find stuff that fits properly that’s not expensive as heck. Me and my girls are not cheap!

I’m strangely not confident enough to wear a skirt to work out in although that’s a goal of mine.

And mullets – I unintentionally had a mini mullet for about 3 days when my hairdresser stuffed up a hair cut. I was traumatized and my hair took years to fully recover. Would have been easier to shave my head and start again. Never again!!!

    • What? Skirts are so great ’cause they don’t require any confidence! They cover any wobbly bits:)

  9. I actually recently bought a leotard that had a knot in the back (almost backless) for the same reason!

    I love interesting unsuspecting details.

oh and I had a mullet as a toddler (when I lived in England), but at least I can say that was before I picked my own hair styles, eh?

  10. Speaking as one of the unendowed, I buy most of my bras in the little girls section. *sigh* A’s are hard to find. *sob*. I don’t go for fancy, I love tank tops and yoga pants. I never got into capris, but I should. I’m wishing the pretty yoga pants weren’t so darn expensive. Every time I see a really cool pair, they’re 30-40 dollars, and I don’t have a big workout clothing budget. So most of the time it’s black or gray. Walmart had pattern tank tops in nice colors this summer, so I stocked up on those.

  11. That top is absolutely adorable!
I luckily never had a mullet, but I totally had those giant eighties bangs when I was in kindergarten (in ’95, but we lived in the south so big hair was always in style).

  12. I didn’t know the mullet was back for real! I LOVE to see a good mullet 🙂 That skirt is too cute, and I am excited about the sports bra suggestion…I really need a good one!

  13. Cuuuuute top, bra & skirt! All of my sports bras are by Champion. My basoomas are so small they’re practically inverted but the XS by Champion has always served me well. I keep telling myself one day these things will grow to adult size & I’ll have a legitimate reason for wearing sports tops but at nearly 27… I may just be daydreaming.

So was the lace comfortable to work out in?

    • Actually it was! That top is a sport top (from Dancewear Solutions) so it’s wicking fabric and the lace was soft and stretchy. And “nearly inverted” – me too, sister!

  15. Love that shirt! I do have a shirt simliar to that it’s got cuts in the front and then lace fabric underneath. At this time since there is a little basketball growing when my tummy used to be the shirt doesn’t fit at all. 🙁 But when he gets here I’ll be rocking in Turbo Kick along with my hot shorts. And during P90X where I am sure he will laugh at me the whole time I work out. His Dad is going to complete P90X with me. I can and can’t wait.

  16. THAT SKIRT.

    NEEEEEEEEED.

…even though it would be *pointless* in my handbalancing class.

    And your shirt is adorable!
And I totally know what you mean about aureola amputation.
    YEOWCH.
Don’t forget shoulder dislocation when you try taking the @#$% thing off,
    too.

I’ll probably give that bra a try!

  17. had to add a tip to all the other small chested girls, the best sports bra i’ve found is one by moving comfort, style is called ‘alexis’. amazing sports bra.

  18. I’d kill for awesome workout out fits. But right now I have to use my 4 year old shorts and 2 sports bras.

We can only come to this conclusion once we understand that A) We have free will to
choose evil or righteousness and B) We have chosen to do evil
and finally C) The results of this decision are the depravities we see around us.
