The Ultimate DIY Garage Gym [Plus: The Hot Sweaty Mess Workout]

This tire weighs 160 pounds. And this is the “small tire”. I’m trying to smile but see all the cords in my neck popping out? Hot! No, literally. It was 113 degrees today.

Not everyone loves working out in a gym like I do – there’s the expense, the noise, the hassle, the crazy people and of course the having to share of the equipment. So what’s a non-gym rat to do to get their sweat on? The Garage Gym (or home gym but that’s not alliterative and therefore not as amusing to me) is a staple of exercisers everywhere. Not only do you never have to worry about someone messing up your circuit but if you get an E. coli infection from dirty equipment at least you have the comfort of knowing whose fecal matter contaminated it. (Wash your hands, people!)

So when my friend and fellow fitness geek Tyler (you may remember him from our Great Break Dancing Experiment?) told me about the fancy gym he’d made in his garage, mostly out of equipment he’d fashioned himself, I knew I had to see it. Of course when I told Tyler this he replied, “Well you can’t just come LOOK at it.” He offered to make up a workout for the Gym Buddies and I using all his cool equipment – most of which I’ve been dying to try but had not yet gotten to. I told him not to hold back. I believe my exact words were “Kill us.” I did not think he’d take that literally.

Okay so it wasn’t entirely his fault that we almost died today. Mother Nature also tried to do us in. As part of Heat-pocalypse (wow, that’s not catchy at all) 2011, we had a heat index today of 113 with 97% humidity. Did I mention our workout was mostly outside and his garage is not air-conditioned?

This pic does not even begin to do justice to how hot and wet it was out there today. (It was so steamy that our camera lens kept fogging up!) You’d think we’d have postponed it for a cooler day but I was actually excited to workout in a non-climate-controlled venue for a change. Weather adds a certain je ne sais quoi, don’t you think?

So first I’m going to take you on a tour of Tyler’s Garage Gym and how he made his stuff and then I’ll give you the Hot Sweaty Mess Workout at the end so you can try it on your own if you’re so inclined! (It was a great one!)

Any of you who’ve done CrossFit outside of a CrossFit Gym know the frustration of not having a set of rings handy. There’s no standard piece of gym equipment that truly replaces the combination of strength and balance that the rings require. Tyler bought these bad boys but you can make your own pretty simply (and cheaply). Tyler is demo’ing the ring dips.

Gym Buddy Megan’s daughter makes it look so much cuter! Yes we had all of our eleventy-thousand combined children with us…

I had to get in there and try to relive my old gymnast days (so fun!!). In the background you’ll see some other staples of a good Garage Gym: an industrial fan (especially today!), rubber interlocking floor covering (Tyler got his for cheap off of Craigslist from someone going out of business), a weighted ball, dumbbells, a speed rope and a kettlebell. Not pictured: a metal keg for throwing/lifting.

This is a slosh tube – it’s basically a length of PVC pipe filled 60% full of water and then capped off. Tyler had two sizes: the small one which I used and the big one (pictured) which I carried half way across the driveway looking like a drunk before dropping it. The instability of the water shifting inside the tube is what makes this such a powerful workout tool. Lunges + slosh tube = the hardest lunges I’ve ever done. Mark’s Daily Apple has a wonderful tutorial on how to make your own slosh tube. (Their tip: not filling it with alcohol. Awesome.)

Shuttle sprints go out of the gym with the 30-foot intervals marked on the street in chalk. Also written on the street in chalk: “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Aw! We used his toddler son’s shoes as the shuttles.

Gym Buddy Allison’s using a set of homemade paralettes – mini parallel bars – to do decline push-ups (in the sprinkler Tyler kindly set up for us to run through between stations).  The CrossFit Journal has step-by-step instructions on how to build your own paralettes. Not only are they super cheap but they’re very versatile. You can use them for L-sits, handstand push-ups, triceps dips and other gymnastics-inspired torture.

Next up is the squat jump box. Of course you can use it to jump up on but Tyler’s showing us a variation where you jump up on the box, then jump off, land in a deep squat and then jump up in the air. With just a few pieces of scrap wood you can make your own – here are instructions in how to make your own adjustable-height squat box.

Krista improvises – beautifully – her own squat box out of a rock. (Want to know why Minnesotans often have huge boulders at the end of their driveways? So that when your whole yard is covered in snow you can back out of your driveway without running over your yard using the rock as your guide. Or so they tell me.)

No Garage Gym would be complete without… a full-length mirror! Kidding. …Without a pull-up bar bolted to the wall or ceiling! These are pretty cheap to buy these days (and portable too – my dad brought his door-frame chin-up bar to our family reunion!) but they’re not difficult to make either. Check out this video tutorial of how to make your own chin-up bar. Also, notice how Tyler is doing pull-ups with a 60-lb sandbag (another easy-to-make gym staple – just be careful not to screw it up like we did!) hooked over his feet? Jealous? Me too.

I’ve saved the best for last! And by best I mean absolute worst. The tire was by far the hardest piece of equipment for me to use. Tyler punched two holes through a large tire (yes, I’m going to keep saying large even though he insists 160 pounds is a small tire) then hooked two chains with handles through it. First we pulled it. Or tried to. It took everything in me just to get it going but hey it made my favorite shoulder vein pop out! This was the only station I dreaded.

Once we pulled a certain distance (20 feet? maybe?), we had to flip it end over end back to the start. This also royally sucked. I know I look all non-nonchalant but I wanted to puke right here. Check out this tutorial on how to make your own tire dragging sled.

Funnily enough, I was the only one who hated the tire. Allison and Krista made it look like a piece of cake dragging it (Al even did it forwards and backwards) but I showed them – it took both of them to pull me and the tire! Oh, wait…

The last thing we did with that Satan-spawned piece of (blistering hot) rubber was pound the crap out of it with the sledgehammer. I gotta say I enjoyed this part. Although maybe not as much as Krista did. She’s our farm girl, remember?

This is what we did between sets. For me it wasn’t the actual exercises that felt extra difficult in the extreme heat but rather I couldn’t recover in between. I was sucking wind so hard I just wanted to lay down on the grass. Don’t worry, we stayed plenty hydrated with water and electrolytes! (P.S. Like my kicks? They’re my new favorite shoes – the Mizuno Prophecy!! More on them another day…)

It sounds crazy but by the end of the workout I was kind of enjoying the sauna-esque heat. It made my muscles really limber and honestly once you’re soaked in sweat it doesn’t matter how much more liquid comes out of you. I didn’t even bother with the deodorant today! Raise your hand if you’re (not) Sure! (Anyone else remember this commercial as a staple of their childhood too??)

We finished off by taking a few runs through the sprinkler. Megan thinks we smell bad.

A HUGE thank you to Tyler and his lovely wife (who is not enjoying the Sweaty Hug) for sticking us in their garage and trying to kill us!!

(I heart my Bad Kitty Sassy Fitness blinged out top! It wicks the sweat and fits like a glove. And while they did give it to me for free, the opinion is all my own! Seriously, if you like unique, sparkly, not-your-average-Target-tank workout clothes you have to check their stuff out!)

The Hot Sweaty Mess Workout (as promised)!

Complete 3 sets of the following with a 2-minute break in between each set. Stations are for reps, not time (a set up I found agonizing as it meant I couldn’t slack at all or I’d fall behind!) Whether you choose to do this in a 113-degree sauna is up to you. I recommend it;)

10 Ring Dips

15 Box jump-squat-jumps

2 30-feet shuttle runs

20-foot Tire sled pull

Flip tire to return to start

10/arm Sledgehammer swings

15 decline push-ups on paralettes

30-foot walking lunges or sideways squats with slosh tube

Do you have a garage gym? What are your staples? Do you ever make your own equipment? Anyone else suffering through this insane weather too??

  1. Awesome workout! Looks like fun, even though I think you’re nutsos for doing that outside today! My gym has a tractor tire (ha, love the midwest!) outside that some of the guys flip around this huge section of the back lot. I haven’t had to do that yet (I’ve informed my trainer there are reasons I’m paying to be inside at the gym and *not* outside by myself, hahaha!) but it looks like a killer workout. I wonder how much the tractor tire weighs? Hmmm.

No garage gym for me, but we definitely have the heat/humidity. It’s sitting at 100+ heat index at 10:30 p.m. still!! Bah!

  2. gym buddy allison

I love us!! I still can’t get over how much sweat we lost this morning. A huge thanks to Tyler- your garage rocks!! We definitely should do this again on a cooler day, Maybe sometime in the fall.

  3. Thoughts that ran through my mind as I read this:
Wow, that’s hot! Not like Paris Hilton “that’s hot,” but WOW, that’s like, Bikram hot!
    I am a wuss.
I wonder if the Bad Kitty shirt has anything to do with the YA novel series?
That is an awesome home gym!
    I’m a wimp.
I have that “Sure” jingle stuck in my head. I also remember an image of the Statue of Liberty in the ad. I don’t think she needs deodorant.
I am SUCH a wuss! That’s probably why I’m still fat.
    And finally:
    You guys ROCK!

    • I love being party to your stream of consciousness! And you are NOT a wuss! Trust me, we don’t do this every day.

  4. You guys have way more stamina than I could muster in such heat! It’s not that bad out here, I think it was around 95 today, but I couldn’t stand being outside for more than thirty minutes this morning on a walk carrying a toddler.

I don’t have a garage gym to use, but there are playgrounds around LA that have self-powered gym equipment that work pretty well (just torturous in the heat).

  5. I love that gym – it looks like so much fun 🙂 I have my own gym at home but it’s no-where near as professional !

I have weights and a weight bench; punching bag; skipping rope; hula hoop (who knew it was so hard – it used to be easy !) I tried to make a sand-bag weight but it didn’t work very well.

I’m not suffering through heat – at the moment it’s so cold, wet, windy and miserable outside that I can see my breath in the middle of the day. I don’t know what’s going on with this weather but I’d like proper seasons back.

  6. I LOOOVE THIS as it brings to mind my fave espn Worlds Strongest Man & Woman competition!!

    now
    Ive been meaning to ask.
    who takes those great photos?!

  7. I used to have a medicine ball, 12 lb weights, yoga mat, resistance bands, and a big ball to lay on…but now…it’s back to just my yoga mat. And that’s all I want or need right now + running. And I am happy! But yes, garage gyms and at home workouts save lives and sanity!!!

  9. Looks like I have something new to purchase: That “Lionel Richie Fan Club” t-shirt.

  10. Kudos to you! We have crazy heat index levels here too, and rather than continue normal roller derby practice at our unairconditioned venue, we moved “practice” to the local fake-Mexican restaurant for margaritas!

  11. Wish I had the equipment to do that workout, it looks fun! (Other than the ridiculous heat, that is.)

    • I thought of you when we were doing it! Somehow I think you would have loved it, heat and all;)

  12. You guys are great! There are no close cross fit gym’s in my area 🙁 I think I’ve bemoaned that fact on here before but there is a gym that does the big tire workouts near by but nobody knows anything about so I’m afraid to even try it. eek.

  13. I have a soft spot in my heart for garage gyms. I live on the first floor of a two family with no garage…so my rings hang from the bottom of my upstairs neighbors porch and my weights are in the basement where you need to be under 5’6″ to lift overhead. I’m dreaming of the day when I can have my own garage gym!

  14. I’m always looking for ways to get exercise while doing chores around the “ranch!”

If I knew then what i know now, I would have had a house with fewer bedrooms and more room in the garage!

  15. You guys are amazing! But you are right, once you are wet, it doesn’t matter HOW wet.

Just a thought… Check out the “recovery” picture. Notice the difference in your hand placement and the effect on your shoulders. Charlotte’s shoulders are pronated by putting thumbs to the outside. Megan has her hands correctly positioned to keep her shoulders back and protect her back / lats.

  16. Just the thought of 113 degree heat makes me want to curl up in a little ball and whimper.

But wow, lots of great ideas–never heard of a lot of these, and it’s always great to get DIY tips for cheap workout options. Note to self: must investigate slosh tubes! Even the name sounds fun.

  17. Thanks for the awesome home gym ideas! I want to get mine up and running.

You should come visit me! It’s 68 degrees here, just like it’s been for the past 8 months.

  18. This might sound crazy, but I miss tire flips and box jumps!! We did that in a bootcamp style class I took at my gym a while back (before they let the trainer go — I don’t know what was up with that, he was brilliant, fun, and wholesome).

I was good at the tire flipping probably because I’m a bigger girl (I’m not saying I’m fat, what I mean is I’m not petite — solid Dutch ancestry going on here). And I LOOOOVED letting lose on the damn thing with a sledgehammer! TAKE THAT, TIRE.

Thanks for the links, I’ve been wanting to integrate box jumps at home, but I’m afraid I’d break the coffee table if I tried it with what I’ve already got on hand. 🙂

  19. This looked like a ton of fun! This would be a great way to break out of the same ‘ol workout routine! And I love outside!

  20. Charlotte, I applaud you and the Gym Buddies for working out in the heat we’re experiencing! We spent yesterday evening in the lake to avoid the heat but be outside at the same time.

I have a home gym that has a treadmill, mini stair stepper, Gazelle (my mom’s), hula hoop, jump rope, dumbbells, kettlebell, resistance bands, yoga mats, weighted gloves and a 3 foot high stack of workout DVDs. Yet, I don’t use any of it nearly as often as I should!

Try to stay cool until this brutal weather leaves us!

  21. Hard.
    Core.

My home gym consists of 3 pieces of equipment that I paid a total of $112 for ($100 and $2 and $10): A Stair master knockoff, a nordic track and a spin bike (that was $2). Plus a bosu, a ball and 4 sets of weights. I actually gave up one of my gym memberships and have been working out at home the last few months for the most part. What I do looks like lying on the couch or perhaps being in a coma compared to your easiest workout. But I am many years your senior so that’s my excuse 🙂

  22. Whenever I see someone working out in this heat (yes, here in Illinois we are also suffering from this miserable weather), I say, “They’ve gotta be crazy!” I really, really hate hot weather — it makes me dizzy, nauseous, headachy and worst of all, whiny! On a normal day, however, I think a garage gym sounds like a great idea.

    • I hear you Esmerelda…I was all of those things that day! Ugh, if not for the peer pressure, I’d have been sitting on the lowest level of my house doing absolutely nothing! 🙂

  23. This looks so awesome! The workout looks absolutely amazing and almost fun!

The Lionel Richie Fan Club T-Shirt is amazing.

    • Yes, all the man-commenters today are big fans of the Lionel Richie tee! And here I thought you guys would be all over the tire heaving/sledge hammering/grunting business!

  24. I so miss my garage gym. I had a homemade pull up bar, 12 kettlebells, a suspension trainer, full set of dumbbells, an olympic bar/plates, squat rack, treadmill, kicking bag, and c2 rower. It was pretty killer. All I have left is the kettlebells, suspension trainer, bag, and rower.

I was going to ask you about that top. It’s super cute and looks awesome on you!

    • Thanks! It’s skin tight so you know there’s one week out of the month it stays in the drawer but it’s a great compression shirt and really good with sweat wicking (hence the reason I chose it for this day)

  25. YES!! we have (had) a garage gym. at our old house. we had a full power rack, dumbbells up to 100, sleds to drag, prowlers to push, a 300 pound tire, a glute ham raise/back raise machine, a lat pulldown/low row machine, lots of chains and bands and boxes for squatting, jumping and stepping, a reverse hyper machine and tons more.

right now, our current garage is too small, so we only have 1 or 2 accessible pieces of equipment. can’t wait to get it set up though!

  26. You all look amazing! I so want to come & play! I always wanted to do one of those tire things & a real sled pull device like they use in gyms. I am getting old & this would be tougher for me now but still want to play! 😉

PS; You site always works OK for me later at night but during the day – it still is slow & sort of skips. A lot of other sites that have changed formats do that now too – weird!

That gymnastic move, amazing! That sled pull – tight buns! 🙂

  27. Hahah – if you do do any sloshed slosh tubing you must send pics! MUST. And thank you about the heat thing – I really did like it!

  28. I thought the workout at crossfit today was timed so I was slacking a bit. The clock hit 10 minutes and we didn’t stop, hmm maybe 15? Then someone was done at 13 something… Turned out it wasn’t timed, it was 3 rounds and I was waay behind. Oops.

  29. I wanted to share 2 clips of me working on a piece of homemade exercise equipment I developed.

  33. My husband and I have put together a garage gym based around a Trx trainer I purchased. However, our success at using it has been marginal. I don’t mind the heat of summer as much as the cold and dark of winter. What does your friend, Tyler, do during the frigid MN winters? Thanks.
