Explanation of Yesterday’s Post & Contest Reminder

April 30, 2011

There was some confusion yesterday in the comments of my post in regards to the story about my baby being in the hospital and me still in the most serious depths of my exercise addiction – let me be clear: That “baby” is now nearly 5 years old. No need to worry about me, that story (which I also told, albeit in less detail, in my book) is from before I got treatment, 4.5 years ago. Sorry that wasn’t more clear in the post! Thank you for the concerned e-mails though:) But while you’re reading and wondering about my sanity, [...]

Prebiotics, Probiotics and a Hospital Epiphany [Giveaway!]

April 28, 2011

Hospitals with their life, death, and strange smell zeitgeist have been the setting for several major revelations in my life (not the least of which is that nutritionists consider Malt-o-Meal a “solid food” but Jell-O is a “liquid”) and this time it was no different. My 3rd son, just nine months old at the time, hung limply in my arms as nurses and doctors buzzed around us. There was no waiting for us in the the waiting room when I brought my baby in, nearly unconscious with a fever of 107. The triage nurse took one look at my son [...]

Donating Plasma: Get Rich (or Get Sick?) Quick!

April 27, 2011

(So that fountain of snot? Has erupted into a volcano of vileness. I am so so so sick. Fever of 102. Throat like I swallowed glass. Just trying to explain if I’m late replying to your comments/messages or if I get delirious and send you something really wacky. In the latter case, please keep it so you can show me when I have recovered and we can both laugh about it. Thank you.) Everyone knows one of these guys in college. You know, the guy who never has a job nor gets any cash from home and yet somehow manages [...]

Fountains of Snot Workout [Breakdancing is totally rad!]

April 26, 2011

“Cherry Cherry Boom Boom” “One Hot Mess” “My Buns Hurt” and the strangely poignant “Somewhere I Belong” – One of my favorite things about Bodyrock.tv besides their seriously hardcore workouts is all the fun names that Freddy and Zuzana give them. The names generally having nothing to do with the actual workout (imagine my disappointment when the Hot Warrior workout did not come with any hot warriors) but rather what they were dealing with in their lives at the time (I know, I know “Cherry Cherry Boom Boom” – I snickered too). So how cool would be if instead of [...]

Karl Lagerfield Wants to Sell You Ice Cream [And then mock you for getting fat]

April 25, 2011

Skinny Girl Eating Ice Cream: A study in social morés. Eclipsed only by the Fat Child Eating Ice Cream tableau vivant, nothing brings out more opinions than a thin girl with a cone. Some people are jealous: “Lucky genetic freak gets to eat ice cream and still look like that?!” Others are sad: “I’ll never be thin.” Others moralize: “Ice cream is bad for you, skinnyfat girl!” Some diagnose: “That has eating disorder written all over it – I remember when I used to starve for an entire day just so I could eat ice cream.” And some resolve: “I want [...]

The Errand of Angels

April 25, 2011

“I bet you’re the kind of girl who doesn’t really get a long with other girls.” He said it so coolly that my high-school self immediately knew the correct answer. “Oh yeah, all my best friends are boys,” I said obligingly. That wasn’t even remotely true but even my then-self knew that we women are supposed borrow a friend’s lipstick in the bathroom and then use that same shade to mark her man in the bedroom. I added, ”I’m not crazy like those other girls.” What I meant, of course, was that I was low-maintenance (lie), no-drama (lie) and that I’d be [...]

New Website Issues & Leslie’s Back!

April 24, 2011

First, the big news: Leslie Goldman, author of The Locker Room Diaries and erstwhile blogger is back! Years ago when I first started blogging, Leslie’s blog The Weighting Game was one of my daily faves. Her wit, her honesty, her lack of fear in writing about bodily fluids – I loved her! She shuttered her blog to move on to bigger and better things but now she’s back (with a brand new rap!) with her new site All Health Breaks Loose. Second: We’re still working out the kinks with the new site (the comments for old posts are still missing) but [...]

All Your Abs Questions Answered

April 22, 2011

The “Wicked Wiper” is supposedly the ab move to end all ab moves. According to Women’s Health magazine, they couldn’t find a single fitness model who could do it (for the photoshoot they had a guy hold up the model’s butt and then they photoshopped him out!). It has since become my personal quest to find a person who could demonstrate Wsquared under their own power. Just as I was beginning to think only Sasquatch, the Loch Ness monster and the second gunman were honing their abs with this doozy, it happened. I saw someone do it at my gym. [...]

Meal Frequency and Hormones: Are you a snacker?

April 21, 2011

One onerous cross-county trip, somewhere around mile Nebraska, my husband invented a fun little car game. Turning to me with a straight face he said, “Plastic: pro or con?” “Excuse me?” I said and threw some rice cakes behind me, hoping they’d land somewhere in the vicinity of the kids. “Plastic. Are you for it or against it?” replied the high school debate geek. “You mean like credit cards?” One of the rice cakes came flying back at my head. Note to self: baby does not like rice cakes. “Whatever. Just plastic.” “How can anyone be against plastic?” I said, [...]

Gym Etiquette: Ma’am, your sports bra is showing [Reader Question]

April 20, 2011

The Cleavage Corner: it’s where we banish inappropriately dressed Gym Buddies who are having a hard time keeping their lady bits to themselves. Yes, it’s a real corner on our weight floor and yes, we actually use it. The Cleav Corner was established one day when I was testing out a new running skirt at the gym – while I loved the skirt (still running in it 3 years later!) – I did not so much love the attached mesh undies. Let’s just say that while the large open weave made for great breathability it did not make for [...]
