Join me for a Mini Experiment? Plus: Spam Spam Everywhere and Contest Winner!]

Those of you watching me stumble around like a newborn colt on Twitter – yeah, I’m that bad – will already know about this but FitJerk threw down an ab-tastic challenge that I couldn’t resist! He posted his most killer ab workout and the Gym Buddies and I are going to give it a whirl (after finishing Lindsey’s workout of course!) on Monday. (Surprise, Gym Buddies!!) Anyone want to join in the pain fest? If you do it, make sure and send me an e-mail or tweet letting me know how it goes for you!

Bonus points to TechnicalParent Joshua who already did and is still sore!

Two short items of GFE business:

1) As you may have noticed, I have been picked up by a few spam bots resulting in about 20 spam comments a week – mostly on old posts. They’re annoying and stupid. I wish they would leave me alone. But all of the ways to prevent the spam – captchas, filters and the like – usually make it harder for legit commenters. So I want to know if you are irritated enough by the spam that you think I should put the filters back on (and realize you’ll have an extra step in posting a comment) or if you don’t mind the spam. Personally, I don’t mind manually deleting the comments as they pop up but that doesn’t stop them from being sent out to people who subscribed to that comment thread. I’ve created a quickie poll – please take a second and tell me your preference* (click thru to my site to take the poll):

2) The winner of the Core Performance Women book is Erin S. Carter! E-mail me and I’ll get you your book!

*Anyone who leaves me a comment using the words “cialis” “pneis” or “weight loss tea” gets a group wedgie.

  1. Silly Charlotte! The way to avoid 20-spams a day is to have a boring blog. I just got my very first spam comment this week. After nearly 4 years of blogging. I felt so proud.

By the way, can I interest you in some Free Niagara? How about a Senile Enhancement Kit? Girlz gone wild with punctuation!!!!@#$!%!!!

  2. Ironic that you should post this tonight as I just went and moderated the comments on my SIL's blog that talks about her conjoined twins and their progress on separation. Out of 60 comments, about 20 were about penile enhancements, russian chicks looking for a good time & Japanese language ones that I have no clue what it says but it's all linked so I just deleted it "just in case." OY. Stupid.

  3. I was having this problem, but you can turn comment moderation on for posts older than a set number of days; 7 days, 14, whatever. This way, I get a notice on my dashboard telling me I have comments needing moderation and I can publish or reject them as I please. While this hasn't cut down the work for me, at least they don't automatically display, and I can reject 20 at a time if need be. From the Dashboard, click the "Settings" link next to your blog's name (or the "Settings" tab if you're inside your blog), choose the sub-heading "Comments," and the 9th option reads "Comment Moderation." Select the second option for "Only on posts older than ___ days." I selected 7, but you can do 4 or 7 or 14 or 21; it's all your choice. Like I said, it helps keep the riff raff from automatically displaying, but I still have to opt for the publish or reject. I'll take it, though, if it means I can keep them from displaying to my actual readers. Hope it helps!

  4. Even my pathetic little blog has attracted the spammers, so I had to turn on the word verification – got rid of them, and no-one has complained (about the word verification OR the lack of links to enhancing anything!)

  5. Man, I've been blogging for 3 years and I've never had spam! Maybe I should leave the food and crafts behind and go for a topic that could be taken out of context more easily…

Anyway. A lot of the blogs I read have the captchas turned on. It doesn't bother me at all to have to type in the silly word, and it doesn't seem to dissuade readers from commenting. So go with whatever will make you happy about it, we'll keep reading and keep commenting!

  6. I have been looking for something to target my abs (still trying to lose the last of the baby pooch!), so I am going to give this "experiment" a try!

  7. Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too)

Are you kidding? Where else will I get my scientific knowledge base for viagra and the like? Love the spam! 🙂

Might do this workout. I'm still sore from one I did last week though!

  8. Just looking at that ab workout made me cringe. But I'm up for it.

That sucks you have to deal with spammers. They drive me crazy, so rude.

  9. Thanks for the props. My first thought was, "I know I can do 30 V-Ups, so I can do all this." Yeah, I can…as long as I don't sneeze or laugh for 48 hours. I had a sneezing fit the next day at work. I thought I was going to cry.

    Also, does "pannus" count?

  10. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman

Oh, those are spam? No wonder why they never work.

    😉

  11. Hi Charlotte! I have to delete a bunch of spam too.. very annoying & yes, older posts!

I was going to link to FJ's ab article this coming week but looks like you got it covered! I still may as part of a post vs. all of it. We do have similar readers.
🙂 I do some of the moves but some I have not done recently as I cycle my moves so may have to get back to them!

PS: On the spam, I think you should do what is best for you!

  12. Wow – I am up for trying that ab workout but cannot imagine getting through all of it. Was hoping to lift today so maybe I can tag this at the end – then I will have tomorrow to recover while standing around all day watching my youngest play in a volleyball tournament.

  13. I'm in for the experiment also I MAY die after doing so, so if I do, I bequeath you all my 80's music on iTunes.

  14. FitJerk's Fitness Blog

Nice Charlotte, you got a bunch of people on board. Genuinely looking forward to seeing how people do in this.

If there's anything that will kill you, it'll be the tempo not the reps.

Good luck. Tweet at me with you abdominal cries… I'll be all ears.

  15. Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter)

Voted. I don't mind the spam. Thank I'm going to skip the ab-tastic workout. Lindsey's workouts have been so fun, but I CANNOT wait to get back the yoga studio.

  16. Janice - The Fitness Cheerleader

Friends don't let friends use blogger… With WordPress there's a plugin called akismet and I haven't had a spam comment in years!

Good luck with the ab workout!

  17. I got all excited 'cause I thought you were talking about canned Spam.
    Ah, well.
Back to my green tea/cialis smoothie.

  18. I already do most of those ab exercise via Ab Ripper X (P90X) and yep they are killer. I've yet to try a power wheel, but I did some abs on TRX a couple of weeks ago and that was intense on the core!

  19. If you switch to WordPress, Akismet will pretty much eliminate all SPAM. It is amazing.

  20. I'm really thinking I need to make the switch to WordPress already!!
