Can Changing Your Dishes Change How You Eat? (Giveaway Post!)

“Country Blue” melamine flatware is what I grew up eating off of. You will excuse my parents for their apparent lack of taste – it was the ’80s so both melamine and country blue were omnipresent and with three little kids they were just being practical. Eventually they moved on and my mother purchased a set of beautiful white and red stonewear that looks much better in the family holiday dinner pics. The problem? I haven’t moved on. That’s right, I am eating off the same dishes today that I did as kid. Those little blue plates, now slightly chipped with some discoloration, have moved with me to college, off to my first job, when I got married and up to this very day. In fact, right now I have a blue salad plate sitting right next to my elbow with the remains of my muy delicioso lunch (thanks to Gym Buddy Krista!) on it.

Nice Flatwear = A Flat Stomach?
One of the diet tips you will frequently read is to make everyday eating a special occassion. Buy nice dishes that you set on a clean table with real napkins and no distractions, so the logic goes, and you will automatically slow down and savor your food more. To further amp up your dining experience and minimize overeating, you can add flowers or eat outside or any other number of things to prettify your eating environment. And some studies – like the infamous blue plate study – support this reasoning. Although I daresay you don’t need researchers to tell you that eating in a clean, beautiful setting is preferrable to sitting in front of a cramped, cluttered computer desk (ahem).

According to this, the only thing my dinnerware has going for it is that my plates are blue and small (weirdly, everyone in our house eats off of child-sized dishes – even my husband!). It might be time for me to grow up and buy some actual dishes. Enter Accent Furniture Direct. When they first e-mailed me, I was confused about what home decor had to do with health and fitness. That is until I saw their supercute and funky NotNeutral line (which is also very affordable, I might add). Seriously, how cool would you feel eating off that plate (above) with a city map of London on it?

Although this set was my personal favorite. Who could eat a Little Debbie craptastic brownie off of a Zentastic plate like one of these?

Another favorite item are these cloth napkins. I recently switched my family from paper to cloth napkins in an effort to be more green and save some cash. While we – I live in toddler central remember? – use cheap white washcloths, these would be so much more fun:

Who wouldn’t eat more salad if you had these Tim Burton-eque salad bowls?

And drinking all your glasses of water just got easier with these babies. (Makes you want to add a slice of lemon and mint sprig, no?)

This one has nothing to do with anything except that I just love it:

  1. The Decayed Gentlewoman

I am a big proponent of sitting down to dinner. I do it every night!
I think that where my environment catches up to me is that when I am really bored at work, around 2 or 3pm, I suddenly become ravenously hungry and want junk food. I usually stave it off by having some tasty and healthy snacks ready, but I notice I don't feel that way on the weekends. I blame the boredom of my work environment for making me snacky!

  2. Interesting post Charlotte! Although in my family, I don't know if the tableware changes our eating habits, but it definitely changes our eating etiquette. We try to always eat on nice stoneware/china, yep, even the kids. It causes them to behave better and all of us to feel a little more proper at the dinner table. When I break out the paper plates, messes and poor dinner behavior ensue. Oh, and FYI, buy an extra set or 2 of your dinnerware when it's on sale, then there's no problem when a dish is broke hear and there.
By the way, I loved loved the Black Ribbon Salad Plate set!

  3. 1. I definitely think your environment plays a part. I grew up overeating as a teenager to compensate for self-esteem issues, and whenever I'm at my parents house, I eat about double what I normally do. Yikes.

    2. And as for what I'd like from Accent Furniture, I think the Reston Lloyd – Calypso Basics Melamine 5 Piece Mixing Bowl Set in White would be really nice to have.

    Thanks for the contest!

  4. 1. Oh, definitely. I actually eat MORE when I sit down at the dinner table and have the food right in front of me. But when I eat on the couch and the food's in the kitchen it's easy to forget it's in there and not get a second helping. Is that what you mean by environment? πŸ™‚

    2. Regardless of what I just said above, I would love for my dining room to be more classy and less of a space to throw junk mail and library books. I just bought a new sideboard and I would really love something to hang on the wall above it. The Ashton Sutton Starburst Mirror would look fabulous in there! Maybe I would be distracted enough by it to only eat one serving of whatever I made for dinner.

    3. I'll….get back to you on that.

  7. I definitely think that your environment affects how you eat and not just with dishes, but also where you are at and who you're with.

My husband and I don't have fancy plates, but I sometimes use smaller plates in order to not be confused by portion sizes.

  8. I'm ok with all the rules, except the last item (hee). No way I'm going to run out and hug someone and then tell him/her that it's all for a blog giveaway…

    Nice gifts though.

  9. 1. I definitely think that not only environment affects eating habits, but if you eat alone or with somebody else. Even if I am at my clean kitchen table, if I am alone in my apartment I tend to eat/graze more and faster because eating is less fun if there is no one to enjoy it with! I also tend to eat better when I am not putting something off…I know it is terrible but if I am sitting at my computer procrastinating I am much more likely to eat crap.

    2. I love the In the Mix Mug with Lid set- so clever to make coaster-lids! I also love the city plate set- nothing better than dreaming of adventures! I also wrote to them and requested a Barcelona plate… πŸ™‚

    3. Since I have no problem hugging random people, and I had read this post before going to my guitar lesson today, I hugged my guitar teacher. She was cool with it. A little bit surprised but thanked me with a strange expression on her face. hehe. My entire class thinks I'm weird now, which I don't mind but it would be great if it got me this gift certificate! My dishes are falling apart.

    Thanks!

  10. 1. Absolutely, yes! Wherever I live I tend to eat what's cheap. In California, the cheapest squash is kabocha, so I eat it ALLLL the time. I also adapt the way I eat to who I'm around.

    2. I need a TV stand, so maybe I'd get a cute nightstand for that? I can't decide which one though.

    3. Okay πŸ™‚ Does the woman who did my pedicure count?

  11. Isn't melamine the chemical that caused the poisoning in cats and dogs because it was used in the pet food from China?

  12. Oh my goodness, plate porn!

    Seriously cute stuff there.

So just to be ornery I'm going to dissent from the rest of the crowd. For me, the environment is much less of a factor than (a) how hungry I am and (b) how yummy the food is. The setting affects my enjoyment of the occasion, sure, but I'm an enthusiastic eater and for me, meal times are all about Me and My Food.

  13. Environment impacting eating. Depends. It's funny, but I've been tryin to buy organic lately and some of it is so much worse at being green than the *bad* stuff! But, I am trying to be more responsible that way.

I have to pick just one? Just one? ugh. lol. Well, love the raven type of dessert plates. Your family all eat off of small plates like that? I'm switching as we speak (well, more like figured out last night that I really needed to!).

  14. 1)Environment definitely affects how/what I eat. If I'm eating in front of the TV on a comfy couch, I'm going to crave warm breakfast foods and not dinner foods (which throws off meal planning because the only time I have to watch TV is in the evenings).

    e.estt[at]yahoo[dot]com

  15. 2)I'd buy the Bai Design Retro Kitchen Clock and Timer. It'd go great in my kitchen πŸ™‚

    e.estt[at]yahoo[dot]com

  16. 3)I actually just did this! Oddly enough, it was my sister (with whom I don't live). She was picking me up from the train station, and since I hadn't seen her in months, I thought a hug would be appropriate. Not so. Apparently she's changed since going off to college and doesn't "do" hugs anymore. Kind of embarrassing when your own sibling is shrinking away from your hugs. Oh well. At least she knows I care, right? πŸ˜›

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  17. dragonmamma/naomi

I love the novelty of eating from different plates and bowls. I think this may be part of the allure of restaurant eating for lots of people, but they don't know it.

Although I have a matching set of dinnerware, I also have a growing collection of intriguing plates, bowls and glasses that I've gotten from thrift stores. Particularly on half-price day, I can go on a wild shopping spree and come home with a bagful of goodies for the kitchen for just a few dollars.

Which isn't to say that I wouldn't love to win a gift certificate for new stuff. That city-on-a-plate collection is totally cool!

  18. Yes! I bought some little french bowls at a yard sale and only eat out of those now. I love them and they make me take notice of what I put in them.

Something from LeCreuset. A stock pot, perhaps.

  19. 1.I really believe that your environment impacts the way that you eat. On the days that my husband and I eat with his grandmother, I tend to eat more – since she sets the HUGE table with ALL the dishes she has prepared – and then we linger around the table talking. During this time I find myself picking extra bites of food even after I am full.

    2. I am in love with everything at Accent Furniture. But if I could have just one item, I would buy the Powell – Louis Philippe Marquis Cherry Cedar Chest.

    3. I hugged one of my co-workers who happens to be a very good friend. Her response – Um, Kim, are you feeling okay today?

  20. I'm usually just a lurker, not a commenter, but I just had to try for this.

    1. I absolutely love eating off of pretty plates! But, I think that the environment will only affect your eating if you want it to. I tend to eat off of the tiny plates, thus limiting my portions. (Because I want to limit my portions.) My husband will stack the tiny plate higher than my child and then go back for seconds, thirds, fourths… He has no desire to eat less and will eat until he is stuffed no matter how many times he goes back. (Darn that pro athlete metabolism!)

    2. I think I loved just about anything I saw.

    3. I hug people all the time and people here are used to that. They just smile and probably tell others how strange I am.

  21. 1. I've been trying to reduce the number of dinner meals that include meat. I'm incorporating 2-3 vegetarian dinners each week now. I read somewhere that a steak dinner for four leaves the same carbon footprint as if you went out and drove your SUV around for 3 hours while leaving all the lights on at home. Anyhow…

    2. I LOVE the city plates set! Especially New Orleans. πŸ™‚ I wonder if you can mix and match…

    3. I will make this my goal for today. πŸ™‚

    Christin Bland

  22. I'm terrible about having an actual dinner, much less sitting down for it. I for often than not will pick and snack for hours. I definitely notice a difference when I make a proper meal for myself and then sit down and enjoy it.

As for the product that I like, I love their TV stands (and we're in desparate need of one… the clutter littered around our tv is driving me crazy).

And given that I'm at work (and I work with mostly men), I skipped the hug, but have complimented several people, and they all reacted with pleasant surprise.

  23. Wow, cool website! They have tons of stuff! I choose the Winsome Basics Baker's Rack. We've been looking for a baker's rack for our dining room and it looks like it would match our furniture. As for tableware, I think the only thing to change your eating habits would be the size of the dishes, not the design. I ate off of White Corelle dishes growing up and still do today.

  24. My environment definitely impacts how I eat–when I visit my parents (closer to the shore) I know I can fresh seafood that's better for me and that hasn't traveled far(thus conserving resources). I also know in the summer I have no excuse to overpay for produce that isn't local.

  25. I think the enviro you eat in does dorectly impact what you eat. Aren't you more tempted to fill your plate at a picnic when its one of those huge green plastic monstrosities with all the little sections? Exactly. I love their tree plate you picke dout , BTW. Very cool!

  26. MAPS ON A PLATE?? THAT'S SO FABULOUS! Now I can watch my peas barge down the Hudson or imagine what would happen to LA traffic should it be covered by a "snowstorm" of greek yogurt. Aren't the experts always telling us to bring out the kid in ourselves? Putting the focus back on enjoyment of eating and less on just shoveling in the food is always a good thing. Thanks for the contest!

  27. 1) Like other readers, I cop to watching TV while eating, which I KNOW makes me eat more, eat faster and not taste my food. I also totally believe that red on the walls (like in Italian restaurants) makes you eat more!
    2) Um, what WOULDN't I buy on Accent's website? I like this clock a lot http://www.accent-furniture-direct.com/Verichron-Sun-2407-VRC1175.html
    3) I hug and compliment strangers nearly every day – you kow I do!

  28. No question about it -I'd order (and probably will) the Vessel -Fusion 9" plates and companion bowls. I can see that little ridge making my meals look so organized.

I don't think that my environment effects my eating much at meals. Snacks, however. Totally different. The important thing for me is to be conscious when I'm eating, not mindlessly shoving food into my piehole.

I'm going to randomly hug someone at the gym today. And completely curious about the reaction.

  29. oh these are so cute. I'm not sure if I'd differently or not on them though…

I can't even begin to decide what I'd get! Too much selection! I need a new filing cabinet if I were to be practical I suppose…

  30. I definitely think environment affects how you eat. Most restaurants designers feature a color palette including the color red for a reason – it promotes excitement, activity and appetite!

  31. I would get the Twin Labs picture frames in Giggles. I have a nursery to decorate!

  32. I will admit (quietly) that environment absolutely impacts what I eat, when, and, worst of all, where. Balancing our schedules and dinner and two-year-old all at the same time is quite a pain, so I usually end up either eating quickly with the toddler or after she goes to bed, which usually means sitting on the couch, eating in front of the tv, somewhere between 8:30 and 10:00pm. So, yes, environment is a huge factor. While I prefer to eat early, I find that I actually eat less after she's in bed because I don't like eating after 8pm. That's about the only thing in my favor since that "late" dinner is usually 10 Rosemary & Olive Oil Triscuits with shredded sharp cheddar and crumbled feta atop, which I've tossed in the microwave for 35 seconds to just warm and start to melt them. Not exactly a healthy meal, if you know what I'm saying. It's just hard to sit down together, all at once, and eat slowly when the toddler picks at her food like a bird and is done within 5-10 minutes. Hence the scarfing when trying to eat with her. I'm sure it will get better…right? Right? Oh, wait, that's right; number two arrives in August, so it'll be three years or more before that battle's over.

  33. Does my environment impact how I eat? Definetely. I have always had a thing for snacking while reading. There's nothing I love more then cozying up with a good book and a salty snack. Unfortunately, I don't really pay attention to how much I eat so unless I only put a small portion in front of me, I'll keep eating until I"m done reading.
I also think that who you are eating with can change your eating habits. My parents are relatively healthy and eat reasonable portions and we tend to do the same with them. My in-laws however eat huge portions of whatever. When we visit them, we always end up over indulging and pay for it when we get home!

  34. Hi Charlotte, I'm piping in here for the first time after reading your blog for a couple months! Time to come out of hiding for a chance to win some fancy Zen dinnerware πŸ™‚

I do think environment makes a difference. I find that sitting down and taking time is just as satisfying as the food itself, and if I need food for physical health, I need a proper "dining experience" for my mental health. As far as the actual plates, I'm not sure that it /really/ matters, but I am pretty particular about eating out of my blue/white Chinese porcelain fish-design dishes with a small fork. I suspect that's my own neurosis though. (I'm fine in restaurants.)

I love the Black Links plates on Accent Furniture. I also still use the same dishes from my childhood (took them to college, still have them) and wouldn't mind adding some plates to the mix. I've shattered most of my dishes, and if I break one or two more…I'll have to start eating right out of the pan, I guess. Talk about Zen.

I'll hug my friend at dance class today. Usually she's the touchy feely one, so she'll probably be surprised if I initiate it!

Thanks Charlotte, I love your blog πŸ™‚

    kate[dot]spanos[at]gmail[dot]com

  35. 1. Absolutely. Eating in front of the TV, I can cram a pound of pepperoni in my mouth and follow it with a block of cheese. Sitting down with my family and eating real food often leaves me feeling satisfied much sooner.

    2. If I could buy something, it would probably be the 6-drawer wicker storage chest to start… I have a lot of junk to hide!

    3. Sorry, I'm at work, and not going to hug people, because that would be weird! Especially with my big pregnant boobs. I don't even hug my husband anymore! lol

  36. Those are some great looking plates!

My folks have some kind of pinkish art nouveau dish set. We never ate off of it that I can remember, but it's interesting to see it in the cupboard πŸ™‚

  37. recipesforcreativity

1.I absolutely think my environment impacts what I eat! If I sit with my partner and he's eating quickly, I react to that and eat quickly. If I eat in front of the TV or while I blog my food goes away without me paying attention to it, too! I do think a beautiful setting and some candles and maybe even a real napkin (gasp!) would get me to always sit at the table and enjoy my meals!

  38. 1. I think the environment TOTALLY effects how you eat. If you're with ppl that order a lot you're more likely to over eat. If you're not paying attention its a lot easier to lose track of that bag of chips.

    2. This item is stellar and "they" do say red wine is good for your heart: http://www.accent-furniture-direct.com/Concept-Housewares-WR-44528-EP1101.html

    3. I hugged my NEW hairdresser yesterday. I was referred to her by a friend and we spent the whole appointment talking about the friends up coming wedding. She didn't butcher my hair and it was actually pretty amazing so I gave her a hug I was soooo happy with it and felt like we'd connected. A little weird yes, but felt right at the time. I complimented her mad skillz with scissors.

  39. 1. I think your environment plays a huge part in your eating. When I was in grad school/writing my thesis for the M.A., I ate most of my meals in/on my bed, surrounded by books in dead languages and in front of my computer. I gained 20 pounds. When I try to make a concerted effort to eat in the dining room or in my living room or on the balcony, I really do believe I eat less, because I'm engaged in eating, not in watching a random video or reading the news or checking my email. I also think I eat more relaxedly (yes, I know that's not a word) when I know my kitchen is already clean, and I don't have to get up and clean it afterwards.
    2. I would buy (http://www.accent-furniture-direct.com/KitchenAid-Cookware-50745-KTA1038.html) this green kettle because it's gloriously practical, yet it's something my mom would completely disapprove of, because "You'll get sick of the color long before it wears out." I don't actually think she's right, but I'm always too scared to buy things in bright colors.
    3. I hugged my sister, who just gave birth to her first child five weeks ago and has been feeling fat (even though she's skinnier than me again already) because motherhood suits her and she's looking beautiful. She just smiled and hugged me back.

  40. 1) I think it is very important, not that I don't still eat in my armchair at home all the time. At work, though, I do find it hard to be satisfied with lunch because I eat it at the computer, and there is nothing to differentiate and make me feel "done", other than running out of food. I have to use some self-discipline not to have cookies all the time because dessert feels like a meal is over to me. At home, this is less of an issue, because there are no cookies for sale in my kitchen.

    2) I would get plates that are a map of cairo. Cool!

    3) well… I complimented my co-worker's shoes. But I didnt hug her.

  41. Oooh it all looks great! I love the season dinnerware collection and the cities on plates. Currently all of the dishes in my apartment are property of my sister, so when we go our separate ways I'm going to have nada (except for my George Foreman, 2 mugs, a blender and a rolling pin. It might be tricky to host dinner parties with those things).

I recently did the hugging thing- someone held out their hand for me to shake and I hugged them instead. Everyone loves a hug!

And my environment totally impacts what I eat. This weather calls for lots of fruits and veggies!

  42. I love those bowls! I spent most of my college and beyond eating off of red plasticy plates my parents sent with me, but they've all chipped enough they have been thrown out. I have the vastly superior Ikea plate sets. I keep saying when I get a dining room table, I'm going to get a nice set of everything to match the room – but it's been almost two years and we are now just considering putting in a pool table instead since we either eat outside, at the kitchen table, or (bad I know) in front of the TV.

To be honest though, I think I eat *slower* in front of the TV because I'll get into a show and then find my food there 30 mins later, and at the table, all I'm doing is eating and thinking "hope I can finish this soon so I can start x show on the DVR, hehe". I usually plan carefully what I'm going to eat beforehand, so where I eat it I don't think affects me quite as much as if I just ate without thinking… but I'm just weird that way.

  43. I have long believed in eating off lovely dishes, or at least ones that are meaningful to you. I have a favorite everything: bowl, spoon, glass… and my cousin and I lost weight by eating from smaller dishes. I have been searching for an out-of-the-ordinary, colorful set of dishes for ages! Thanks for this post!

  44. Environment totally plays a huge part. If I am out in public I will behave myself far more than if I were at home alone, sitting in my comfy pjs. At home I am more likely to eat more and eat not so super stuff. Nobody is there to judge me. Plus, I am typically distracted (usually by the computer, a book, or the TV) so that doesn't help much.

  45. Oddly enough, I do find that this makes perfect sense. New, "nicer" things are always motivators for me. New workout clothes, new tennis shoes, etc motivate me to workout more and harder and new dishes? I can definitely see how that could motivate someone to improve their eating habits.

  46. Cool post.

I do think my thoughts about our environment effect what I eat in terms of trying to buy organic when I can or free trade items when I can.

I need rugs & I saw plenty I liked but the surfboard one,
L.A Rugs – Dean Miller Surfboard Pink Surfboard Rug, just is so cute! Don't even know what I would do with it.. just cute! I saw a seashell one I liked too!

Hug a random person… well I have been hugging the grandkids since they are in town. Will have to follow up on the random thing. Maybe in the gym tomorrow! Not sure if someone would want my sweaty & smelly body to hug them! πŸ™‚

  47. 1. Yeah, fo sho. I eat slowest when I'm eating out, next slowest when I'm sitting down to dinner, and when I'm just eating by myself, I have a hard time with not finishing my meal in five minutes flat.

I only like using square plates ;p not sure why. Maybe it's the novelty. But there are lots of square plates out there it's hardly a new thing anymore…

  48. If I hug a random cow, do I still get entered in the contest? (It wasnt easy, either – cows hate being hugged, you know!)

I LOVE those blue napkins! They would match my kitchen/dining decor perfectly! πŸ™‚

  49. Of course your environment plays a part of how you eat. If you're around people who eat more, you tend to eat more too. (At least I do.) And if you are around people who pick at their food and eat nothing, I tend to eat less because I don't want to be the one eating the most.

  50. 1. (Ok, this is a long thought thread. I promise it goes somewhere) I think that "what" you're doing while you eat makes just as much of an impact as "where" you eat, what you eat off etc. I am a habitual book snacker. I don't have a lot of time to devote specifically to reading, so I read while doing other mundane things. I read while pooping, eating, driving… whenever I can sneak in a few pages. The biggest problem I have is reading while eating. If I bring a book to the table with me, I will mindlessly consume food as long as the pages contain words (and they always do). The same is true at parties, when there is stimulating conversations etc. We went to a party for some friends that moved to DC, and without even thinking about it I ate like 15 burritos. The next day I couldn't figure out why I was so sick, until I realized what I had done.

Anyways, for me, paying attention to my food is critical. But then again, if I was eating off some fancy plates, I guess paying attention to my food would be easier.

    2. All cool, but I'd defer the decision to my wife. (I'm a good husband like that)

    3. My random hug of a random coworker got me into 2 weeks of sexual harassment awareness training.

  51. ok, I did it – I hugged a girl (not a TOTAl stranger – we went to college together and she recognized me) and I told her she had beautiful skin. random, but true.

  52. 1) I think the environment has an impact, though I never tried the cute plate technique. Eating in front of the computer or while studying (way too often) makes me eat more than if I eat in the kitchen or living room.

    2) I think we have the same tastes; I love the seasonal dinnerware set and the napkins you showed! Not a big fan of the maps though.

    3) I hugged my friend earlier to say hi and then to say thanks for helping me with my groceries, does that count? Otherwise I'll hug and compliment another random person tomorrow at work tee hee!

  53. Do you think your environment impacts what and how you eat?

I used to all the time. I’m a vegetarian and it seemed like back in high school (when I started to be veggie) I always had to explain myself. I did reports on it and memorized all these reasons why it is a good idea. Of course environmental impact is one of the big reasons a lot of people choose to eat veggie. My personal reasons are mainly animal-loving and health-conscious but researching and knowing the facts about affects of various diets made me think about it all the time!

  54. #2-It’s not very fitness-y at ALL but the Autumn Forest Metal Wall Sculpture would fit right in in our funky house!

  55. If I won, I would love to buy the Infinity Instruments – Del Sol Wall Sculpture! So beautiful!
