You Win Some, You Lose Some

I had to do a little blog roll cleaning today. The girls at Elastic Waist are right, the Skinny Website is just girl-on-girl hating and a total downer. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with this website for a while now. I feel stupid admitting to this, but I liked reading it because seeing celebrities gain and lose weight made me feel better about my own fluctuations. And maybe there’s nothing wrong with that. But I also took more than a little satisfaction when the celebrities looked bad. You know – I may not be rich and famous but at least my stomach doesn’t look like that. *cough*tarareid*cough*

Unlike Elastic Waist though, my beef is not particularly with Rian, the writer (although I hate to call her that because her writing skills are awful). My main problem is with the comments. The people that comment on there say the most horrible, hateful things and I always feel worse after having read them. (There is a commenter there named “Charlotte” – please note that she is not me. I’ve never commented on that site.) I also don’t like the focus that the Skinny Website puts on just one aspect of a person – their weight. We are already much too hard on ourselves and each other to tolerate this kind of sniping.

So… Bye bye Skinny Website! And…

Hello Lucas!
I’ve added a great blog to my blog roll – Lucas Training! You’ll recognize him from his well- thought-out comments on this site. So check him out, especially if you are interested in weight lifting. He’s got some interesting things to say.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming!

  1. Hi Char,
I agree that sometimes it’s best to just stop gping to a certain site/watching a certain show/reading a particular magazine. If something makes you feel like crap, ignorance can be bliss (note I said “can” – this is not always true…I’m not promoting overall ignorance, but in a sense avoidance of materials that lower our self-image.) I did this a few years ago with Howard Stern and any stripper show on HBO. For some bizarre reason, I would watch thse programs, unable to turn away even as I felt myself sink lower and lower. Now, I can’t even believe I ever watched freaking G-String Divas. What was I doing?!

  2. I’m famous! Thanks for the link, Charlotte!

  3. I think its better for your soul to not visit those sites. I really feel bad karmic vibrations whenever I read all the negativity. I puts me off my groove for the rest of the day.
    Peace Out!

  4. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with that site too. It really is the comments that gets me. People can be so terrible when they are safe behind a computer and no one can see them.

  5. Leslie – G-string Divas?!?! I’d get all judgey except I had a total fascination with America’s Next Top Model for about 3 cycles before I managed to snap out of it. So.. yeah. Soul corrosion, right there.

    Thanks Jason, you hippy you!

Gena – glad to know I’m not the only one!!!

  6. Hi Charlotte!

I totally understand where you’re coming from on the Skinny Website. Until a few months ago, I too checked it out fairly regularly, but I finally cut myself off for the sake of my body image and mental health. There’s waaaaay to much hating going on over there.
