Quick Update: Monkey Workout

I love monkeys. Almost anything is funny to me if a monkey is doing it.

And most of the people at my gym this morning probably feel the same way! You wouldn’t believe all the comment Allison and I got as we completed Day 1 of the Monkey Bar Gym workout.

At first glance, I thought the workout would be too easy and too short. Oh, the hubris!!! MBG offers 3 “levels” for each workout. I assumed we’d be at least on the second level. Not even. Solidly in the middle of the first (a.k.a the beginner) level. And it was haaaaard! I was right only on one point: it was short (about 30 min). Mercifully short. I’ll be darned if I could have continued one minute longer. And I’m quite sure we’re going to be seriously sore tomorrow.
Here are my stats for today:
Calories burned: 483 (in a mere 30 minutes!!) This is turbokick calorie burn, and it’s not even “cardio” per se, but more “strength”
Max heartrate: 184. I usually only get in the 180’s during sprints or Turbo – never before during weights
Minutes in my zone (80 – 100% of max heartrate): The whole stinkin’ workout!
Fun factor: 10 out of 10 – both for us and for everyone laughing at us (with us?)
I will say though that our YMCA didn’t have the equipment required so I had to improvise (for example, we used a 30-lb dumbbell instead of the 30-lb “d-ball”). It also took me a really long time last night to figure out what exactly I was supposed to do and for how long. Also, we aren’t used to finishing our workout so quickly (and we weren’t about to go pick up our kids before an hour was up!) so instead we got a half hour of handstands, scorpions and headstands in. Good day:)
I’m so excited for tomorrow I can’t stand it!

  1. I need to check into these workouts! I’m all about the quicker, yet intense, workout!

  2. I think you and Allison will not be able to go to the bathroom for a few days, so I would make sure you have a cup nearby (one with a lid of course!)
And you forgot to mention the handstand you held for 10 counts or the enjoyment you had in watching your friends topple over!
Look forward to working out with you tommorrow.
I will probably be needed the cup too!

  3. I LOVE monkeys, too! =) So much so I actually have some stuffed ones. Silly, I know. But my inner child refuses to grow up. 😉 This workout sounds incredibly fun, and it makes me nostalgic for the good old monkey bars on the school playground. When I think of all the quality workouts I did as a kid, without even knowing it … =) I may just have to try this monkey workout!

  4. if you like that, see if there’s a crossfit affiliate near you. crossfit .com on the right sidebar lists all the affiliates.

  5. I must admit, at first I didn’t click on the link so I mistakenly thought this class took place entirely on the monkey bars and was worried about your hands blistering up, endering them unable to blog (gasp!) But I just clicked thru and it looks fun…and how much do I love the naughty-sounding “1-arm kettelbell snatch”?!

  6. Hee hee. Those names most definitely ARE naughty! Love ’em! 😉
